Aliquippa put together a 22-point third-quarter surge, sparking the Quips to a 54-45 victory over the host Warriors at the Central Valley Roundball Holiday Classic on Monday at Geneva College.

Qa’lil Goode, with 15 points and seven rebounds, and Cam Evanochko, with 14 points, led the Quips.

In a low-scoring first half, Aliquippa led 18-14 as neither team got into a flow offensively.

Goode helped spark the Quips as they opened up a 15-5 run to start the second half.

“It came down to coming out here with a different mentality, a different mindset that we’re the better team,” Goode said. “We wanted to come out here and show why we are the better team.”

Goode tallied 11 points in the second half.

“He created a spark for us in the locker room,” Evenochko said. “He told us to lock in, play with energy, and that’s how we got it done.”

Vari Carter capped off the run with a 3-pointer to go up 33-19.

The Quips led 40-26 at the end of three, and Evenochko played a part in that.

“He goes the hardest during practice and on defense,” Goode said. “Even on scout team, he goes hard to give us a look.”

The Warriors went on a 14-7 run in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter with Angelo Conti hitting an and-one layup, followed up with another layup which cut it to 47-40.

Conti led with 18 points and Adam Shroads and Ryan Conti both tallied 11.

Central Valley made it a two-possession game, cutting the deficit to 49-43. Nonetheless, it was a tad late, and the Quips iced the game.

The Quips held the Warriors to just two 3-pointers.

“We watched a lot of film on them, and they’re not really good shooters off the dribble,” Goode said. “We just let them shoot off the dribble and kept a hand up.”

In a defensive game, the Quips pride themselves on their physicality.

“At Aliquippa, we’re going to get physical no matter what sport it is,” Goode said. “It can be tennis, but we’re still going to be physical out there.”

The first quarter was a grind with both Central Valley and Aliquippa attempting to out-physical each another.

Despite Goode opening the frame with a wicked one-handed jam, CV contained the Quips with the score tied 5-5 at the end of one.

The Quips outscored the Warriors 13-9 in the second quarter to take a 18-14 lead.

CV’s Angelo Conti led the half with seven points.

“This was our toughest competition so far,” Evenochko said. “This is a good out-of-section win, and it felt good to win.”
