Here is the first installment of a 10-part series ranking the top WPIAL girls basketball championship games in district history.
2012 — WPIAL Class A finals: Vincentian Academy 54, North Catholic 50
Between 2007 and 2016, these two parochial schools would meet five times in the WPIAL Class A girls basketball title game. The two had split their first two championship meetings with North Catholic rolling to a 26-point win in 2007 and Vincentian Academy turning the tables with a 26-point victory in the 2010 finals.
In 2012, the Trojans and Royals split their two Section 1-A games and finished as co-champs with 11-1 section marks. Vincentian was 24-1 overall while North Catholic was 20-5, but it was the Trojans as defending champs who were the No. 1 seed while Vincentian Academy was No. 2.
It looked like a repeat as North Catholic was up by 10 points early in the fourth quarter and led 50-43 with three minutes left before Vincentian Academy dominated the rest of the way and scored the game's final 11 points.
Laura Primyon hit a game-tying 3-pointer for the Royals, and sisters Abbey and Ally Bartoszewicz each connected on a free throw, along with a pair of shots from the charity stripe by Noreen Fischer, to lead the improbable comeback. Lauren Wolosik had a game-high 20 points for the Trojanettes, who would avenge this title game loss with a 71-58 win over the Royals in the PIAA semifinals.
Sparked by super freshman Brenna Wise, Vincentian Academy went on to win four more WPIAL championships by an average title-game margin of victory of 21.5 points.
