Cooper Roscosky doesn’t wait long to hear what Kiski Area wrestling coach Chris Heater has to say about how a practice went. What Heater appreciates is that Roscosky is more interested in the feedback than the manner it is delivered.

“On a daily basis, he would want to know what I thought today,” Heater said. “Sometimes, I would tell him it was great practice. Other days, I would tell him I don’t think he worked hard enough. I admire that he wants the feedback. A lot of kids don’t want to hear about the negative stuff.”

Roscosky, who will be a senior, used that desire for progression to finish as a PIAA, Southwest Regional and WPIAL Class 3A runner-up at 215 pounds last year. Roscosky, who has a 113-23 career record, recently announced his commitment to wrestle at the University of Buffalo.

Roscosky said he seeks advice so he can work on problem-solving. If there is an issue, Roscosky would like to find solutions.

“I started off the bat,” Roscosky said. “Since Day 1, I’ve been doing it. I know my coaches have the best intentions for me in their heart. When they tell me I need to do something, I try to accomplish it.”

Roscosky finished with a career-high 41 wins as a junior. He had the misfortune of being stuck in a weight class with Belle Vernon’s Elijah Brown, who handed Roscosky five of his eight defeats.

Three of those losses came by two points or fewer, including a tense, 4-3 decision in the state final.

Roscosky, who placed sixth at states at 189 pounds as a sophomore, said his expectations have changed quickly.

“The progression is cool,” Roscosky said. “I didn’t expect to be this good. Ever since I was a kid, making the state finals was a dream. But looking back at the season, I didn’t feel I reached my full potential.”

Roscosky has a busy schedule laid out to try to pursue more medals as a senior. He is planning to wrestle at the Super 32 in addition to his regular training.

Roscosky said having his college choice out of the way was an important step.

“Buffalo was one of the first schools to reach out to me,” he said. “I kept my options open for as long as possible. Buffalo has a great coaching staff. They are invested in the wrestling program, and the administration has backed it.”

Heater believes Roscosky will be a threat to win the state title again. He’s always asking for advice.

Heater has seen him enact the guidance he has been given.

“He’s a hard worker,” Heater said. “He sets goals and puts in the work to achieve them.”
