Banner season for Quaker Valley track included medal haul at MAC meet

The Midwestern Athletic Conference track and field championships provide high-energy competition the Quaker Valley athletes look forward to annually.

This year’s early season 26-team invite took place April 23 at Shenango, and the WPIAL champion Quakers proved to be dazzling.

QV took home 32 medals from the WPIAL tune-up meet with 17 on the boys team and 15 on the girls squad.

Individual medalists for the boys included James Irwin (200), Jackson Pethel (400), Clark LaLomia (800, 1,600), Jonah Montagnese (1,600), Tyler Bell (3,200), Davin “Macky” Gartley (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Xander Vescio (100 hurdles), Hugo Castellini (300 hurdles), Winston Clifford (high jump), Aiden Dwyer (high jump, triple jump) and Nicholas Winnowski (javelin).

LaLomia finished first in the 800, Gartley won both hurdles events, and Clifford and Dwyer tied for the top spot in the high jump. All three relay teams also garnered victories.

Gartley set a new meet record in the boys 3,200-meter hurdles with a winning time of 38.94 seconds, as did the boys 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams with times of 3:26.25 and 8.06.62.

QV’s girls individual medalists included Kwilai Karto (100, 200), Lucy Montagnese (800, 3,200), Evie Rosselli (100 hurdles, pole vault), Rose Pocasangre (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Mia Gartley (300 hurdles, high jump), Oumou “Mimi” Thiero (high jump) and Sarah Minard (pole vault).

All three relay teams also turned in medal-worthy performances.

Rosselli finished first in the 100-meter hurdles and pole vault events while Montagnese won the 3,200. The girls 400-meter relay team also was victorious, setting a new meet record with a time of 48.77.

QV graduate Nora Johns still holds the girls 300-meter hurdles record at the MAC meet with her time of 48.59 in 2023.
