LEWISBURG — Isaac Burtt made his PIAA diving debut at last year’s Class 2A championships and placed 13th overall.
The Beaver senior had designs on a higher finish and a state medal in his return to Bucknell on Friday.
He was able to achieve the first goal as he bumped up four spots in the standings.
However, Burtt missed out on a spot on the medals podium by less than six points.
But despite being so close to a medal — ninth overall — Burtt said his final high school meet was what he hoped for.
“I am very proud with how I dove today,” said Burtt, the third-place finisher from the WPIAL who came into states as the 21st seed.
“Every dive was how I wanted them to be. Not all of them were perfect. There were some that could’ve been a little better here and there. But compared to the WPIAL meet, I am very happy with today.
“I knew there was going to be very good competition here. I wasn’t even ranked this close to a medal coming in. I was happy with whatever place came out of my dives. It does sting a little to be that first guy out (of a medal). I know I can’t control how the other divers perform.”
Burtt was eighth after the semifinals and held that spot by four points over Boiling Springs senior and Bucknell commit Preston Kuhn.
Kuhn scored 36.40 points in his 11th dive to move into medal contention. Burtt’s last dive, a back dive pike with a 1.6 degree of difficulty, scored him 27.20 points.
That sequence clinched eighth for Kuhn with 345.15 points to Burtt’s 339.50.
Mt. Pleasant senior Noah Lahm, the WPIAL champion, earned a spot in the finals before finishing 14th overall with 309 points.
Burtt’s Bobcats teammate, sophomore Bruce Sutter, came in seeded 24th, but he got to the finals and placed 15th overall (289.20).
In all, six divers represented the WPIAL in the Class 2A boys meet.
Indiana sophomore Elias Herman (208.10 points) and Indiana junior Connor Fleming (202.40), the WPIAL runner-up, made the semifinals and placed 17th and 19th, respectively.
Northgate freshman Simon Buzzard made his WPIAL debut. The WPIAL fourth-place finisher was not able to make the first cut to 20 and ended up 24th with 110 points over his five rounds.
