Behind 2 champs, Canon-McMillan girls wrestlers win Powerade team title

Canon-McMillan’s Marlee Solomon and Yunuen Ayala climbed to the top of the medals podium Sunday and lifted the host Big Macs to a team championship at the Powerade girls wrestling tournament.

Solomon won the 118-pound weight class, and Ayala won at 124 pounds. Solomon also was awarded the National Wrestling Coaches Association Triple Crown Award for winning titles at the Ironman, Beast of the East and Powerade tournaments.

Four other Big Macs placed — Alaya Henderson (second, 148), Audrey Calgaro (third, 170), London Ellis (fourth, 235) and Giana Wingfield (sixth, 190).

Canon-McMillan had 171.5 team points and was followed by Cleveland (Tenn.) with 139, Mt. Lebanon (111.5), Kiski Area (95.5) and Quakertown (90).

The Cavaliers were led by runners-up Ava Golding (142 pounds) and Alyssa Tresco (170) and sixth-place finisher Carley King (130).

Other area Powerade champions included Mt. Lebanon’s Camilla Hathaway (155) and Moon’s Haley Smarsh (130).

Plum’s Alaina Claassen (190) and Southmoreland’s Zoey Murphy (235) were runners-up.
