MECHANICSBURG — It started as a back-and-forth, neck-and-neck game, but that’s not the way it ended on Saturday evening between Mt. Lebanon and Bishop Shanahan in the PIAA Class 3A girls lacrosse quarterfinals.

It was 0-0, 1-1, 2-2, 4-4 and 5-5, but it was also 11-5, 12-5, 13-5, and eventually, it was 14-5 in a Bishop Shanahan runaway to close out Mt. Lebanon’s season.

“We knew we could play with this team,” said Mt. Lebanon coach Brian Kattan. “We may be from Western Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh and everybody on that side of the state looks down on us, but we can play lacrosse over there and I knew we would play well.”

Quinn Murdoch, a junior committed to Cincinnati, initially tied the game at 1-1 just 2:05 into the game in a wild first quarter. When Bishop Shanahan went back up 2-1 just two minutes later, it didn’t take long for Mt. Lebo to respond.

Ann Tinnemeyer scored 44 seconds after the Shanahan goal, and it started a three-goal run for the Blue Devils, highlighted by another goal from Murdoch and a goal from Cali Green, assisted by Tinnemeyer, who started the run.

The Eagles went on to tie it at 4-4 with two answered goals of their own. Both were unassisted, from Elise Pezone and Coastal Carolina recruit Emma McGlothlin.

Bishop Shanahan started the scoring in the second quarter as well, and after a trade of goals between Shanahan’s Fiona Duncheski and Mt. Lebanon’s Green, it still seemed this was going to come down to the wire.

But things flipped on their head with 4:23 to go in the second quarter.

It was almost like a beast coming out of hibernation the way Bishop Shanahan woke up. Fiona Duncheski started it with her goal, then McGlothlin went on a personal three-goal run, scoring a hat trick in a minute, 27 seconds, in addition to her first-quarter goal.

Elise Pezone scored another unassisted goal with 1:48 left in the first half to create a five-goal separation before the five-minute halftime break.

The Eagles went on to add four goals and stay in control in the second half.

Stella D’Ambro assured the Bishop Shanahan momentum continued in the second half, and Gillian Greco scored just over three minutes after that. D’Ambro scored the fourth-quarter opener as well, and Pezone followed it up for a hat trick of her own.

The loss ended the junior season for Murdoch, who’s “been tremendous all year,” in the words of Kattan.

“She’s been a leader for us all year,” he said. “We have two great seniors who’ve been great, great leaders and great players. But Quinn’s really picked up a lot of slack there, with only two seniors. She’s done a great job all year, and I can’t wait to see what she does next year.”

The season ends with a WPIAL 3A championship title for the Blue Devils and a finishing record of 16-4.

Bishop Shanahan moves on to face the winner of Saturday’s late game between WPIAL runner-up Pine-Richland and District 3 champion Manheim Township.
