Burgettstown, McGuffey start strong as WPIAL wrestling tournaments begin

Burgettstown and McGuffey got off to a quick start on the road to Hershey on Friday night.

Both schools crowned five champs apiece as the WPIAL Class AA section tournaments were wrestled at Canon-McMillan.

Shane Ilgenfritz (106), Hunter Guiddy (126), Shane Kemper (152), Turner Lehman (182) and Riley Kemper (285) won titles for Burgettstown in Section 1. Nate Yagle (132), Rocco Ferraro (145), Ethan Barr (160), Seth Burgdolt (170) and Garrett Boone (195) had first-place finishes for McGuffey.

In Section 2, Carlynton, Freedom and Quaker Valley led the field with three champs each.

Chase Brandebura (106), Bryce Rodriguez (113), Oleg Melnyk (160) won for Carlynton. Thomas Young (126), Kenny Duschek (138) and Trent Schultheis (170) took titles for Freedom. Justin Richey (132), Conner Redinger (152) and Donovan Cutchember (220) emerged victorious for Quaker Valley.

In Section 3, subsection champs Burrell and Elizabeth Forward led the way with four first-place finishers apiece.

Ryan Michaels (120), Noah Hunnell (145), Ethan Cain (195) and Nick Murphy (285) won for Elizabeth Forward. Ian Oswalt (132), AJ Corrado (152), Ricky Feroce (182) and Mikey Scherer (220) were champs for the Bucs.

The top four finishers at each weight advanced to the WPIAL tournament, which began with first-round matches late Friday night.
