Burrell leads way with 5 in semifinals at Class 2A WPIAL wrestling

Burrell led the way with five wrestlers in the semifinals at the WPIAL Class 2A wrestling tournament Friday at Chartiers Valley.

Carter Thomas (121 pounds), Julian Bertucci (139), Calio Zanella (152), Isaac Lacinski (172) and Luke Boylan (215) are the Bucs still alive in the championship bracket.

Derry, Beth-Center and McGuffey each sent four wrestlers through to the semifinals.

Giovanni Beatrice (127) and top seeds Anthony Mucci (133), Mason Horwat (152) and Brady Brown (189) are the four Derry wrestlers in the semifinals.

Alex Medlen (114), Mason Wright (133), Noah Layhue (172) and Malachi Peak (189) advanced for Beth-Center.

Clayton Ealy (114), Tucker Main (121), Emmett Wolfe (133) and Lucas Barr (139) are McGuffey’s semifinalists.

The top two seeds advanced to the semifinals in each weight class, but six No. 3 seeds were upset victims.

In the quarterfinals, Jefferson-Morgan’s Brayden Hanning (107) defeated Derry’s Rocco DeCario, Neighborhood Academy’s Chaney Lewis (160) knocked off Derry’s Ewan Olson, South Side’s Slayton Williams (189) beat Freedom’s ZeShawn Williams, Carlynton’s Braiden Sudor (215) topped Quaker Valley’s Brennan Breisinger and Bentworth’s Alex Rusilko (285) upended Laurel’s Casey Wilson.

In the first round, Derry’s Jeremiah Gess (145) pinned McGuffey’s Victor Bonus.

Wrestling resumes with second-round consolations at 10 a.m. The semifinals are set for 11:30 a.m. with the finals to follow at 3:30 p.m.
