Latrobe had beaten many opponents this season with late-inning rallies.
But Bushy Run turned the tables on the Jethawks on Tuesday in the Region 7 tournament at Forest Hills High School in Sidman.
Caleb Kerstetter laid down a perfect safety squeeze bunt with the with the bases loaded to score Jon Lovre, and Bushy Run handed Latrobe its first loss of the tournament, 2-1.
Bushy Run now faces Claysburg, which blanked Hempfield East, 4-0, at noon. The winner then faces Latrobe at 3 p.m.
“I usually don’t like to bunt with the bases loaded, but Caleb got a perfect one down,” Bushy Run coach Scott Peyman said. “We got another great pitching performance from Evan (Gigliotti).”
Gigliotti allowed one hit: an RBI single by Mason Fridley in the sixth inning to give the Jethawks a 1-0 lead. He struck out four and walked only two.
“He struggled a little in the first inning and then found his groove,” Peyman said.
Bushy Run tied the score in the bottom of the sixth inning when Brody Hoffman, who stole second, scored on a single by Jake Sincak.
In the bottom of the seventh, Lovre singled and was bunted to second by Noah Rattigan. Jordan White was intentionally walked, and Amauri Thomas singled to load the bases.
Owen Teslevich was a tough luck loser.
Lovre and White had two hits each for Bushy Run.
Claysburg 4, Hempfield East 0 — Dustin Slowik tossed a five-hit shutout, and Claysburg stayed alive in the Region 7 tournament by eliminating Hempfield East.
Josh Cayer and Brody Chismar had two hits each for East.
Catcher Mason Campagna, a Penn State recruit, had two hits and two RBIs.
Three East pitchers hit seven batters.
