Central Catholic edge rusher Ashton Blatt committed to North Carolina on Saturday, giving a verbal to first-year coach Bill Belichick.

Blatt (6-4, 230), a three-star recruit according to 247 Sports, is the 38th-ranked edge rusher in the country and 13st-best player in Pennsylvania.

He chose the Tar Heels over offers from Pitt, Penn State, West Virginia, Indiana, UCLA and Wisconsin, among others.

Belichick, who was an eight-time Super Bowl champion as coach of the New England Patriots and is the new coach of the Tar Heels, helped influence Blatt’s decision to head south to play college football at Chapel Hill.

Blatt will be entering his senior season for the Vikings in the fall. He helped lead Central Catholic to its ninth WPIAL championship last season and had a pass breakup in the 45-14 WPIAL championship game win over North Allegheny.
