Samir Crosby did everything in his power to make sure his football team still had a shot at making the playoffs.
The dual-threat senior quarterback accounted for all five touchdowns as the Centurions (5-5, 3-4) routed Leechburg (7-3, 5-2), 36-7, in a Class A Eastern Conference clash on senior night at Centurion Stadium in Greensburg.
“It’s potentially our last game, so I had to leave everything on the field for my teammates and the other seniors to give ourselves the best shot possible,” said Crosby.
Added coach John Thompson: “He’s a special player. He’s got that ‘it’ factor. Even when the ball isn’t in his hands, he’ll lead on blocks and do anything on the field he can to help his teammates. He’s an electric football player.”
In the first half, Crosby gashed the Leechburg defense for 71 yards on nine carries and willed the Centurions to a 9-0 halftime lead.
“Cannot do it all without the offensive line,” Crosby said. “They’re my saving grace. Those guys work hard day-in and day-out, and I’m thankful for it.”
Greensburg Central marched 49 yards on its opening drive, and Crosby finished it with a 3-yard run. He carried the ball six times for 41 yards on the drive. Leechburg would block the point after, as kicker Jerry Davis appeared to slip.
Davis atoned for the mishap on the Centurions’ next drive, kicking a 43-yard field goal for a 9-0 lead.
Defensively, GCC was stout, limiting Leechburg tailback Timmy Andrasy to 62 yards on 21 carries in the first half.
“Timmy did what he normally does: He ran hard. He’s a tough kid,” Blue Devils coach Randy Walters said. “There was just nowhere to go. They just beat us up up front.”
The Centurions held Andrasy to no gain on seven rushes and a yard on seven other occasions.
“They came out and played hard. We did not,” Walters said. “We did not play the way we know how to play. They beat us up pretty bad and deserve the win.”
Andrasy finished the night with 131 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries.
“Unbelievable defensive effort from our guys,” Thompson said. “We put a good game plan together, but I didn’t know if was going to work. The strength of their team is the running back and their big offensive line. They’re a very well-coached team, and they’re second place for a reason.”
Crosby continued his dominance in the second half, doing most of the damage with his arm.
On the Centurions’ own 47-yard line and facing a third-and-10, Crosby took off to the left and cut back toward the middle of the field, where there was nothing but open space, and took it for a 53-yard score.
On the next three drives, Crosby was able to connect with junior receiver Colin Snively three times for touchdowns down the seem. The scores covered 35, 38 and 24 yards.
“We saw it up top and on the field,” Thompson said. “Coach Zach Cooper called it, and it was there. Snively got three touchdowns. I’m proud of that kid.”
Snively finished with five catches for 117 yards.
Crosby finished the game with 150 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 17 carries and was 7 of 12 for 176 yards and the three scores through the air.
GCC’s win will be looked at, along with the rest of its resume, as it wait to see if it is chosen as one of the wild-card teams in the Class A playoffs.
“It’s out of our hands, but we gave ourselves a chance,” Thompson said. “Our guys played for each other. Senior night is always an emotional night, and they played with an unbelievable effort. We practiced and game-planned to give ourselves a chance. It’s out of our control, so we’ll see what happens.”
Leechburg, meanwhile, lost junior tight end/linebacker Nick Hilty to an injury but escaped with the rest of the roster healthy heading into the playoffs. The focus now is correcting Friday’s mistakes.
“We have to regroup,” Walters said. “I thought we had a great week of practice, but we just didn’t translate it to the field tonight. Have to watch the film and see where the mistakes were and why we got beat. We cannot come out in the playoffs like we did tonight.”
