Defending 3A champ, 5th seed in 2A reach WPIAL tennis finals

Penn-Trafford sophomore Mia Williams is in position to claim her second WPIAL girls tennis championship after winning three matches in the Class 3A tournament Wednesday at Bethel Park.

Williams, the top seed, defeated Seneca Valley’s Kylie Staudt, 10-0, Bethel Park’s Lily Sierka, 10-3, and North Allegheny’s Laeticia Tici-Wessel, North Allegheny, 6-2, 6-1, to reach the finals.

She will meet third-seeded freshman Meriwether McCargo of Shady Side Academy in the finals at 1 p.m. Thursday at North Allegheny.

McCargo knocked off second-seeded Caroline Prisk of Pine-Richland, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in an all-freshman semifinal.

Class 2A – Sophomore Gabriella Dusi of Belle Vernon, the fifth seed, upset top-seeded Cecilia Gurgel of Winchester Thurston in the semifinals to make a surprise run to the Class 2A championship match.

Dusi beat Gurgel, 6-1, 6-1. Earlier, she defeated Sewickley Academy’s Maria Sirianni, 10-2, and fourth-seeded junior Sasha Hoffman of Greensburg Central Catholic, 10-2.

Dusi will take on second-seeded senior Chloe DeSanzo of Beaver in the finals at 1 p.m. Thursday at North Allegheny. DeSanzo got past third-seeded Grace Stitt of Hampton in a three-set semifinal, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
