Springdale forward Hailey Marchlewski played a long ball from near midfield she hoped would put teammate Lacey Shondeck in a spot to score.

Chartiers-Houston keeper Adrianna Rozzo came forward to attempt to play it forward. Rozzo didn’t hit it clean, and it rolled by her. She charged desperately after it, with Shondeck in hot pursuit, but it found its way into the back of the net in the 78th minute, allowing fifth-seeded Springdale to escape with a 2-1 win Tuesday at home during a WPIAL Class A girls soccer playoff game.

“I was looking to play it to my teammate, Lacey, on the wing,” Marchlewski said. “I was looking to play it between the center backs on a little bit of an angle for her to run into and have a straight path to the goal. They were rough in the middle, and it hit off that one girl and the goalie missed it. It was luck, but it’s part of the game.”

Chartiers-Houston coach Robert Acor was crushed for Rozzo, a freshman. The Buccaneers had several dangerous scoring chances in the second half that could have pushed them ahead.

Acor said providing solace for Rozzo wouldn’t be an easy task.

“That is going to be tough,” Acor said. “It’s going to take some time. She’s not going to get over it today or tomorrow. She’ll be back next year bigger, better and stronger.”

The defending champion Dynamos (11-1-1) started the match how they wanted to. Ainsley Wade hit a shot from just outside the box that tipped off Rozzo’s hands for a goal two minutes into the match.

For the rest of the half, the Dynamos only generated one good scoring chance. Shondeck was able to win a ball from in front of Rozzo, but her shot attempt from out wide was blocked by Buccaneers’ defender Lauren Rush.

“I think they deserve more out of the game, Chartiers-Houston,” Springdale coach Marc Bentley said. “They played a good game. They were a much better team in the second half. We started the game well, but then we fell back and thought the remaining 77 minutes would take care of itself.”

Springdale keeper Genevieve Conklin made an important stop in the eight minute. Chartiers-Houston (8-6-2) earned a penalty kick after the Dynamos were charged with a handball in the box. Malynda Rodocker’s penalty kick to the bottom left of the net was turned away by Conklin.

“She had a commanding game,” Bentley said. “She was taking charge of a few of the through-balls they played. She had to because they created opportunities.”

Allie Wingard tied the match in the 25th minute with a shot that went by Conklin. Wingard had another shot a few minutes later that curved toward the upper corner, but Conklin was able to get a piece of it.

“The second half we owned. We had it,” Acor said. “We had a half-dozen chances, at least. We didn’t capitalize on our opportunities.”

Adele Walters-Vrabel had the best chance to put Springdale ahead with about 15 minutes remaining. She lifted a shot from 18 yards out that hit the post after Rozzo got a piece of the shot.

Marchlewski said she felt the Dynamos played scared, but they will be ready for the next challenge.

“It was difficult because they stepped it up, and we have a lot of work to do,” Marchlewski said. “I feel like we played scared when they got that goal.”
