District 31 Legion teams sweep at Region 7 tournament

All four District 31 American Legion baseball teams earned wins during the first day the Region 7 tournament Saturday.

Hempfield East, Bushy Run, Latrobe and Lower Burrell will square off Sunday in the winner’s bracket at Forest Hills. Latrobe battles Lower Burrell at 2 p.m., and Hempfield East and Bushy Run tangle at 5.

Hempfield East 2, St. Michael 1 — Pitchers Josh Cayer and Lucas Demchak allowed one unearned run, and Brody Chismar had three hits as Hempfield East squeezed out a win at Forest Hills High School. Ty Martin had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run.

Jake Yatsky had a hit and an RBI for St. Michael. Jake Singer took the loss.

Latrobe 6, Philipsburg 5 — The Jethawks were out-hit 8-2 but still won. They scored five runs in the fourth inning and defeated Philipsburg at Forest Hills.

Cole Short had a two-run single in the inning, and the Jethawks scored two more runs on a wild pitch. The Jethawks scored an insurance run in the seventh inning when Ty Wisniewski, who singled, scored on a wild pitch.

Jack Stynchula pitched into the sixth inning, and Short earned the save.

Bushy Run 9, Claysburg 3 — At Portage, Jon Lovre started and worked four innings, and Evan Gigliotti pitched three scoreless innings to pace Bushy Run.

Jake Sincak and Jordan White had two hits each, Brody Hoffman doubled and Caleb Kerstetter added a two-run single for Bushy Run, which took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth inning. Dylan Ridley also added a clutch hit.

Bushy Run out-hit Claysburg, 8-5.

Lower Burrell 4, Bedford 1 — Adam Scheftic drove in a run with a single in a three-run sixth inning, and pitcher Colton Whitlock allowed four hits on 68 pitches to lead Lower Burrell at Forest Hills.

Lower Burrell also scored two runs on a throwing error. It took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when A.J. McLafferty doubled and scored on a wild pitch.

Ryan Bates started the sixth inning with a single. He was at third when Scheftic delivered the hit.
