District College Football Preview – 09/15/2011

The weather is turning cooler and conference play is getting underway in three of the local college football conferences. Crossover play continues in the PSAC and the NEC teams tune up for a full slate of conference action next week.

Here are previews of all the games, including three that can be heard here on the Network. All action is on Saturday unless otherwise noted:

Slippery Rock (2-0) at West Chester (0-2) 1pm on WISR 680-AM and the MSA Sports Network

The Rock blanked Cheyney 54-0 last week at home. Slippery Rock defeated Seton Hill 51-14 in Greensburg in Week 1. It’s the first time since 1996 that a PSAC team has scored 50 or more points in it’s first two games.

SRU racked up 488 yards in last week’s win. It’s the first time in school history the Rock has posted 50 or more points in the opening 2 games of the season.

The Rock is 2-0 for the third straight season and fourth in the last five.

QB Cody Enders threw for 241 yards last week. Enders is 21-36 for 354 yards this season with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.

RB Akeem Satterfield has ran for 244 yards and 4 touchdowns this season, he averages 9.4 yards per carry.

FS Brandon Watters picked off his second pass of the season. Watters also blocked a punt that was recovered for a SRU touchdown.

K Kurt Brackman is 12 of 13 on extra points this season, he is also 5 of 5 on field goals with a long of 43 yards.

West Chester fell to Division I FCS opponent Delaware 28-17 last week. LaRon Lee caught 5 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown.

RB Rondell White racked up 152 all purpose yards against the Blue Hens.

Sean McCartney and Matt Carroll have split time at quarterback for the Rams. 4 different receivers have at least 10 catches for the West Chester offense.

LB Mike Pereira and SS Shawn Krautzel each made 10 tackles.

Slippery Rock leads the series 7-6, including a 33-27 win in overtime last season.

Geneva (0-2) at Thomas More (1-0) 1:30pm on WBVP 1230-AM and the MSA Sports Network

Geneva will play their first PAC game this week. The Golden Tornadoes are 0-2 for only the third time in the 19 year tenure of Gino DeMarco.

Geneva lost 46-10 in Reading to Albright last week. Corey O’Patchen caught a touchdown pass in the first quarter.

QB Zack Hayward threw for 172 yards. WR Rocco Colavecchia caught 4 passes for the GT’s, he also came in at quarterback late in the game. Colavecchia is playing at his third school in his career, starting at Division I Kent State, before transferring to SRU in Division II.
Dom Saragusa ran for 63 yards on 6 carries.

The Saints are ranked 9th in the D3football.com poll. Thomas More defeated Hanover last week 44-13, Kendall Owens was named PAC Special Teams Player of the Week. Owens returned a punt 57 yards for a score. Owens also added 2 receiving touchdowns.

RB Domonique Hayden ran for 40 yards and 2 scores, he also had 5 catches for 71 yards.
Thomas More has won the PAC championship for the last 3 seasons, breaking the stranglehold on the conference title held by W & J.

QB Rob Kues was 20 of 29 for 241 yards and 3 touchdowns in last week’s win.
DB Alex Taylor had 8 tackles and an interception for the Saints.
Thomas More has won 3 of the 4 meetings between the schools, including a win 2 years ago at Bank of Kentucky Field.

W & J (1-1) at Bethany (1-0) 7pm on WJPA 1450-AM and the MSA Sports Network

The Presidents are coming off a 20-19 loss to nationally ranked Delaware Valley last week.
WR Adam Dominick caught 7 passes for 105 yards in last week’s loss.

QB Matt Bliss had another good game, going 20 of 31 for 260 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Presidents offense is going to have to improve, they went 0-12 on 3rd down conversions last week.
LB Neil Sorice led the Presidents last week with 17 tackles, including 10 solo stops. Sorice was named the PAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Bethany had their game with King’s College postponed last week with mandatory evacuation ordered in Wilkes-Barre. That game could be made up on November 19th if neither team makes the post-season.
W & J leads the series 68-20, including 28 straight. It’s the third night game at Bison Stadium, Bethany is 0-2.

Bloomsburg (2-0) at IUP (1-0) Thursday at 8pm
The 8th ranked Huskies come to George P. Miller Stadium for a Thursday night nationally televised matchup. Bloomsburg is also ranked 11th in the D2football.com poll. Bloomsburg defeated Clarion last week 45-10. All-American RB Franklyn Quiteh was forced to the bench with an injury and that set up his backup Eddie Mateo. Mateo ran for 179 yards and 5 touchdowns, he was named the PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week. Quiteh did run for 114 yards before leaving in the second quarter. K Dan Fisher ran his streak to 11 with a 20 yard field goal in the first quarter. Fisher needs 6 more field goals to break the school record. Coach Danny Hale now has 196 career victories. IUP coach Curt Cignetti picked up his first career win with a 28-13 win over East Stroudsburg last week. QB Pat Smith, playing in his first game in a year, was 10 of 14 for 179 yard and 2 scores. WR Terrill Barnes had 3 catches for 149 yards and a touchdown. RB Harvie Tuck ran for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns. IUP leads the series 16-9, Bloomsburg has won the last 4.

Carnegie Mellon (1-1) at Catholic (2-0) Friday at 7pm
The Tartans come off a 33-13 home loss to Allegheny and hit the road for the first time to the nation’s capital. RB Patrick Blanks leads CMU in rushing with 191 yards and 3 touchdowns. Rob Kalkstein has thrown for 179 yards on 23 of 37 with 1 interception and no touchdowns. The Cardinals defeated cross-town rival Gallaudet 45-41 last week in dramatic fashion, overcoming a 28-0 deficit to improve to 2-0. Mike Pitsenberger scored the game-winning touchdown with 1:51 remaining in the game as CUA outscored the Bison 31-13 after halftime.

Valparaiso (0-2) at Duquesne Noon
Valpo lost 77-6 at Youngstown State last week. The Crusaders are 0-2 and have lost 22 consecutive games, including last week’s loss to Division III Franklin 49-35. Duquesne downed Dayton 22-13. QB Sean Patterson was 19 of 32 for 254 and rushed for 56 yards. He was named the NEC Offensive Player of the Week. K Charlie Leventry was named the NEC Special Teams Player of the Week. He kicked 3 field goals, all in the second half, the final coming with 30 seconds to play to seal the win. Larry McCoy added 113 yards on 26 carries, he has gone over 100 yards in both games this season. WR Connor Dixon has now caught a pass in 17 consecutive games. CB Jared Williams played a key role in the win, his third quarter interception and return set up a Dukes’ field goal, he blocked a field goal on the final play of the game and returned for a touchdown.

Morehead State (1-1) at Saint Francis (0-2) 1pm
Morehead State lost to Illinois State 52-21. Zach Lewis threw for 371 yards but was sacked 8 times. The Eagles defeated Kentucky Christian 67-0 in the opening game of the season. Saint Francis tries to rebound from a 56-3 loss to North Dakota State in the Fargo Dome. The Red Flash was held to 182 yards of offense, RB Kyle Harbridge only gained 41 yards. A.J. Alexander has 273 all-purpose yards coming into this week’s game.

Robert Morris (0-2) at Morgan State (0-2) 1pm
Robert Morris lost 38-7 to Liberty last week. TE Shadrae King caught 2 passes, he has had a reception in 21 consecutive games. QB Jeff Sinclair completed only 12 passes and threw for one score. It’s the fifth time in the 18 year history of the program that the Colonials have started 0-2. Morgan State was routed by Bowling Green 58-13 last week. Travis Davidson ran for 89 yards and a touchdown for the Bears. Morgan State fell in the opener to Towson 42-3.

Illinois State (1-1) at Youngstown State(1-1) 4pm
Illinois State defeated Morehead State 52-21. QB Matt Brown threw 5 td passes in the win. The Redbirds fell to Eastern Illinois 33-26 in Week 1. YSU set a school record, defeated Valparaiso 77-13 at the Ice Castle last week. The Penguins scored 35 first quarter points and added 28 more in the second. QB Kurt Hess was 12 of 13 for 204 yards and 2 scores. Josh Lee returned a punt 96 yards to the house. YSU fell 28-6 in East Lansing to then number 17 Michigan State in the opener. The series between the teams is tied at 10.

C.W. Post (0-2) at Mercyhurst (1-1) Noon
The Pioneers were beaten by Cal 41-13 last week. RB Thomas Beverly scored 2 touchdowns for C.W. Post. Freshman Tyler Heuer got the start at quarterback. Cal racked up 513 yards on the Pioneer defense. The Lakers are ranked 25th in the AFCA coaches poll. Mercyhurst fell 35-28 to Kutztown last week. WR Trevor Kennedy grabbed 4 touchdown passes from Trevor Rearick, he caught 7 passes for 193 yards. Rearick is second in the nation, averaging 348.5 yards per game passing. The series between the teams is tied at 2.

Millersville (1-1) at Gannon (0-2) Noon
Millersville forced 4 turnovers in a 21-20 win over Lock Haven. The Millersville defense has forced 6 turnovers this season. QB Dan Miller threw for 3 touchdowns. Gannon fell to 0-2 for the first time since 2007 with a 41-13 loss to Shippensburg last week. Freshman QB Daniel Tapscott threw his first career touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Millersville won last year’s meeting 29-26, it’s the only time the teams have met.

Seton Hill (0-2) at Shepherd (2-0) Noon
The Griffins lost 28-21 to Assumption in overtime last week. Seton Hill has now dropped 6 games in a row. D.J. Lenehan threw for 301 yards and a touchdown for the Griffins in the loss.  The Rams moved up to number 7 in the AFCA coaches poll with a 45-7 win over St Joseph’s last week. Tommy Addison scored three touchdowns in the win. Shepherd is ranked 6th in the D2football.com poll.

Cheyney (1-1) at Edinboro (2-0) 1pm
The Wolves were blown out 54-0 at SRU last week. Cheyney held the Rock scoreless in the first, but SRU exploded for 23 points in the second on the way to the win. The Wolves had only 104 total yards of offense. Edinboro defeated Merrimack 49-19 last week. QB Cody Harris threw for 330 yards and 4 touchdowns, he also ran for a score. Harris was named PSAC West Offensive Player of the Week. Moon native Keir Jeter notched 7 tackles, including 3 sacks, forced a fumble and picked off a pass. He gave the Fighting Scots a sweep of the PSAC weekly awards, gaining the Defensive Player of the Week nomination. WR David Bostic caught 6 passes for 126 yards and 2 scores last week, he is now in 8th place in school history with 116 career catches. DB Braden Williams picked off 2 more passes, he now has 12 interceptions for his career. Edinboro leads the series 5-1, Cheyney’s only win came in 1967.

Clarion (0-2) at Shippensburg (1-1) 1pm
The Golden Eagles led 3-0 over Bloomsburg last week on a Tyler Ruark field goal, but were blown out by the Huskies 45-10. QB Ben Fiscus threw for 171 yards and a td. Shippensburg won in Erie 41-13 at Gannon last week. The Red Raiders racked up 475 yards of offense and forced 5 turnovers, giving head coach Mark Maciejewski his first career win. Shippensburg is 7-3 against West Division teams since shifting divisions in 2008. QB Zack Zulli came in relief and threw for 298 yards and 4 touchdowns, Zulli has 8 touchdown passes in the first 2 games of the season. WR Bryan Barley had 4 catches for 113 yards and 2 scores. Clarion leads the all-time series 34-19-1, but Shippensburg has won the last 8 games.

California (1-1) at East Stroudsburg (1-1) 6 pm
This matchup again has history to it as it is only the third time in Division II history that a pair of 200 win coaches will meet. All three have involved Cal head coach John Luckhardt with 216 career wins. East Stroudsburg head coach Denny Douds has 230 career wins, the pair squared off last year at Adamson Stadium. The Vulcans are ranked 21st in the AFCA coaches poll and 18th in the D2football.com poll. Cal defeated C.W. Post 41-13 last week. WR Thomas Mayo caught 6 passes for 180 yards and 2 touchdowns. RB Edwin Gowins ran for 93 yards and 3 scores. Cal rushed for 235 yards against the Pioneers. LB Brian Justice led the defense with a career high 12 tackles. Warriors QB Ray Wagner leads the nation in passing yards per game with a 349 yard average. Wagner threw for 6 touchdowns in the opening week win over Pace. Wagner racked up 323 yards last week in a 28-13 loss at IUP. ESU leads the all-time series 3-2-1.

Lock Haven (0-1) at Kutztown (2-0) 6pm
The Bald Eagles lost 21-20 to Millersville at home last week. Lock Haven has dropped 33 consecutive games. Brandon Brader ran for 119 yards and Jesse Hoover caught 7 passes for 139 yards and a score.
The Golden Bears are ranked 16th in the latest AFCA coaches poll and 15th in the D2football.com poll. Kutztown defeated Mercyhurst 35-28 last week. CB English Peay, a freshman, made 11 tackles and picked off 2 passes. He was named the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week. Kutztown QB Kevin Morton has thrown for 10 touchdowns this season. Morton has thrown a td pass in 19 straight games, he has 63 career touchdown tosses. RB Robbie Frey ran for 131 yards, he went over the 100 yard mark for the 2nd consecutive week. The series is tied at 12 games each with a tie, Kutztown has won the last 4 meetings.

DePauw (1-0) at Allegheny (1-1) 1pm
The Gators will face their new NCAC foe for the first time in Meadville. The Tigers defeated Rose-Hulman over Labor Day weekend 23-13, they had the weekend off last week. Ethan Schweir threw for 276 yards in the week 1 win. Allegheny comes off a 33-13 win at CMU. QB Jordan Fowler threw for 189 yards on 15 of 22 and 2 scores. Sean Griffin caught 6 of those passes for 133 yards and 2 scores.

Thiel (0-2) at Waynesburg (0-1) 1:30pm
WR Neil Blazevich had 8 catches for 79 yards and a touchdown in the 44-14 loss to Widener last week. The score was 14-all at the half, but Widener scored 30 points in the second half. QB Jared Soell threw for 179 yards and a touchdown. Waynesburg had a week off last week when the game with Wilkes was postponed due to the flooding and mandatory evacuation in Wilkes-Barre last week. The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series with the Tomcats 24-8-1, including the last 5 matchups.

Westminster (1-1) at Grove City (0-2) 7pm
It’s the fifth night game at Robert E. Thorn Field, Grove City is 2-2. Westminster leads the series 49-34-8, Grove City has won the last 2 meetings. The Titans were handled by Lycoming 41-3 last week, Westminster was held to minus 19 yards on the ground and just 89 total yards in the game. Kyle Henry blocked a punt in the first quarter which set up a Kyle Henry 24 yard field goal. WR Gino Pasquinelli caught 8 passes in the opening week win over Hiram. Pasquinelli has had 5 or more receptions in 9 consecutive games. QB Shawn Lehocky left the game with an injury last week. OLB Ryan Althausen had 8 tackles, including a pair of quarterback sacks in last week’s 27-7 loss to Lebanon Valley. Chris Gibbs led the way with 11 tackles. Blaine Miller scored the lone touchdown for the Wolverines. Miller has all four of the touchdowns for Grove City this season. Dustin Anwalt caught 5 passes for Grove City.
