When Penn-Trafford girls tennis coach Megan Satira takes maternity leave in late September, she’s leaving her team in the capable hands of her parents: Joe and Denise Hudak.
Denise is the junior varsity coach and Joe volunteers a helping hand.
Satira and her husband Adam are expecting their first child Sept. 22.
“We are excited to help out,” Joe Hudak said. “Especially with an addition to our family here.”
Denise Hudak said she is ready to step in.
“I am the junior varsity coach,” Denise Hudak said. “I help Megan when she needs help or a break. Joe is our assistant. We love to boss him around.”
“I help where I am needed,” Joe added.
Penn-Trafford athletic director Kerry Hetrick said the team will be in good hands during Satira’s absence.
Megan said she likes having her parents at practice and matches because they know how she runs the program. It is a family thing.
“My mom has been the junior varsity coach for as long as I have been the varsity coach (eight years),” Satira said. “My dad just helps where he can. He is at every home practice.”
Penn-Trafford is having a good season. It is tied for first place in Section 1-3A with Latrobe, a game up on Franklin Regional and Hempfield.
The Warriors were scheduled to play Latrobe on Sept. 8 and Franklin Regional on Sept. 19.
Satira said she is excited about the season and is hoping this is the year the Warriors win the section title.
The section single tournament is Sept. 10-11 and senior Mia Williams is looking for her fourth consecutive title.
She was a WPIAL champion in 2022 and runner-up in 2023 and 2024. Satira hopes Williams can win her second title.
“I am excited for coach,” Williams said. “We will miss her, for sure. It is a fun time of her life.”
When Satira was young, it was her mother who encouraged her to try tennis.
“When I was in high school, I liked other sports,” Satira said. “I tried out as a freshman, made varsity, and I absolutely loved it. I ended up quitting my other sports for tennis.”
She played volleyball, basketball and softball. She picked up playing golf after college.
Satira’s brother Anthony also played tennis and her dad played for fun.
“They will do a good job in my absence,” Satira said.
