Robby Shymansky has a PIAA silver and bronze medal at his home, souvenirs from past appearances at the state Class AAA singles tournament.
He’d like to add a gold to that collection.
The pursuit of that begins Monday as Shymansky, the defending WPIAL Class AAA singles champion, opens the Section 3-AAA singles tournament as the returning champion and top seed. He also is seeking a fourth consecutive section singles title.
“For individual and team, finally winning states would be huge,” Shymansky said.
“Winning is pretty much what motivates me the most. I’d probably say the same for my teammates, especially coming up short. You know how hard it is to get there, and you want to go back and rectify it.”
The top four finishers in each section advance to the WPIAL tournament, which begins April 15. The PIAA finals are May 24 and 25 in Hershey, after the conclusion of the state team tournament.
Shymansky, a Yale recruit, advanced further up the WPIAL totem pole each of his first three seasons at Fox Chapel. He finished third in the WPIAL as a freshman and second as a sophomore before getting the title last spring.
But a PIAA championship eluded him: He was runner-up in 2016, didn’t place in 2017 and took third last season.
“He’s a competitor first, a tennis player second,” Fox Chapel coach Alex Slezak said of Shymansky, ranked as one of the top 50 seniors in the country. “He really likes to compete with his whole heart, and that’s what sets him apart from a lot of the other competition that’s out there.”
Although he sat out Fox Chapel’s three matches this week with an injury, Shymansky said he’ll be ready Monday. He hasn’t dropped a set this season, but he knows the difficult competition begins now.
“That’s the most fun part, the matches that are competitive,” he said. “If you know you’re going to win, it’s not as fun. I definitely look forward to playing some better players and having to really fight on the court.”
Shymansky also is leading the way for Fox Chapel’s team: The Foxes (8-0), who won the WPIAL Class AAA championship the last three seasons with Shymansky at No. 1 singles, are undefeated.
Five of seven starters returned from last season for Fox Chapel, including Shymansky, Jared Nord and Milo Barron at singles and Jay Kashyap and Brandon Wei at doubles.
Shan Hassan and Clay Quackenbush are new starters at doubles for Fox Chapel, which finished second in the state in 2016.
Class AA
Michael Odrey did damage last season at the Section 3-AA tournament as Valley’s No. 2 player, and the junior hopes to go further this season.
Odrey, who last year teamed with Alex Ward to reach the PIAA doubles tournament, hopes to do the same at singles.
“It helped me tremendously because it’s making my goals for the future way bigger than they are if I would have never made states,” Odrey said. “It’s helping me out. It’s motivating me to try to push and try to make states for singles this year, and for team.”
The first step is the Section 3-AA tournament Monday at Valley.
Odrey made it to the semifinals last year when he pushed top-seeded Zachary Palko of Indiana before losing in three sets. He lost to Ward by injury default in the consolation match and bowed out in the first round of the WPIAL tournament.
Odrey, now Valley’s No. 1 singles player after Ward’s graduation is off to a strong start this season. Odrey holds an 8-1 record, with his lone setback a straight-sets loss to Palko. The Vikings also are 8-1, with their only loss to Indiana, as they seek another WPIAL playoff trip.
“Honestly, from where I’ve gone to where I’m at now, it’s pretty much my team helping me out,” Odrey said. “I’m not getting any better unless I’m hitting with my fellow players like Aiden Johnson and Mike Saliba. They’re just helping me train and get better.
“(I’ve grown) tremendously. I played some tournaments in the summer. I did some offseason training. I took that next step I had to take.”
Odrey said he learned from his loss to Palko earlier this season, and he might see a rematch at the Section 3-AA tournament: The pair are the highest-returning finishers from last season.
“I played against myself that match. I wasn’t fully mentally there,” Odrey said. “I wasn’t what I should have been. I wasn’t hitting my groundstrokes right, and I was playing defense instead of offense. My mind was just out of it.”
