Fight halts Uniontown vs. Meadville boys basketball game in PIAA playoffs

Officials cut short a state playoff game between the Uniontown and Meadville boys basketball teams Friday night after a fight in the stands spread onto the court.

Host Meadville led 63-55 with 3:12 left in the fourth quarter when the Class 5A first-round game was halted. Uniontown athletic director Harry Kaufman said he was told the score was considered final with Meadville awarded the victory.

However, the PIAA did not include the score online on the updated bracket Friday night.

In an email Saturday, PIAA executive director Bob Lombardi said the two schools were asked to submit reports to the PIAA by Monday. Lombardi declined further comment until those reports were received.

Livestream video of the game showed fans fighting in the bleachers behind the Meadville bench, and some players later became involved in on-court altercations.

“We got our kids off the floor, they got their kids off the floor, and then the game was stopped,” Kaufman said. “From what we understand, the game is over at this point in time.”

Kaufman said no Uniontown players were injured.

Meadville (16-8) was the District 10 champion. Uniontown (22-4) was the fifth seed from the WPIAL.

“Obviously, it’s an upsetting situation all around,” Kaufman said. “… We had a great season and a lot of successes throughout.”
