The high school schedule-maker linked three Quaker Valley teams together Feb. 9 in late regular-season action — two at home, one on the road. All three were victorious:
• Sam Chapman, a 6-foot-3 junior guard, scored 17 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer, to lift Quaker Valley boys basketball to a 76-75 win in overtime against visiting Indiana.
“I would not have hit that shot if it were not for my teammates trusting me in that situation,” Chapman said. “I’ve hit a game-winner (previously), but not at the buzzer like that.”
Sophomore guards Nic Cohen with 20 points and Harrison Kerley with 13 helped the cause offensively for the Quakers, who improved to 18-3.
Senior guard Zach Washington contributed 18 in the QV victory.
Washington connected for 25 points Feb. 5 to spark Quaker Valley to a 59-42 win over Avonworth in Section 2-4A.
Chapman added 10 points.
“We are looking to make a run in the playoffs,” he said, “and compete with any team we face.”
• Quaker Valley’s hockey team stormed past Beaver, 7-1, to improve to 17-1-1 in the PIHL Class A division.
Junior defenseman Jack Watson accounted for a hat trick for the winning side. Sophomore forward Matthias Lezama registered a goal and two assists, while senior forwards Ben McHenry and Jace Vasbinder chipped in with a goal and an assist apiece for the Quakers.
Junior forward Kieran Cain rounded out the QV goal-scoring in the game. Three assists also were credited to senior defenseman Luke Koehler and one to senior forward Colin York.
Senior goaltender Ian Lorang stopped 25 of 26 shots for the Quakers.
• Mimi Thiero, a senior guard/forward, led all scorers with 31 points to propel the Quaker Valley girls basketball team to a 53-31 nonsection win at Rochester.
Sophomore guard Keira Watson added 14 points for the Quakers in a final tuneup for the WPIAL playoffs.
“My expectation for the team in playoffs is that we play our best basketball when it matters the most,” Thiero said. “If we play like we’ve been playing recently, we’ll make a deep run.
“Our performance so far has been very strong. We’ve been coming out to games with a lot of energy. We only lost two section games, so we’ve been doing very good.”

In another late-season contest, the Sewickley Academy boys basketball team lost a 54-53 decision in overtime Feb. 9 at home against New Jersey’s Roselle Catholic.
Sewickley sophomore forward Mamadou Kane led all scorers with 21 points.
Sewickley (21-1) rallied to tie the score at 48-48 at the end of regulation, but the Panthers were outscored 6-5 in overtime.
Trey Lewis netted 16 points and Chase Bray added 12 for Roselle Catholic (17-6).
