Fox Chapel boys soccer coach Erik Ingram is excited about the attitude the Foxes have approached this season with. The senior class Ingram has isn’t interested in reveling in the past.

The Foxes won their first WPIAL Class 4A championship in 30 years last season, which was the sixth championship in program history.

Fox Chapel’s returning players have continued the party, opening the season by winning seven of their first eight matches.

“It wasn’t a surprise to me,” Ingram said. “First off, we have a lot of talent. Secondly, people were focused on some of the players we lost, but we have a lot of players who are interested in writing their own chapters.”

The Foxes (7-1, 4-0) have surged to the top of the Section 3 standings thanks to their excellent attack. Fox Chapel has also shown its mettle by winning two of its section contests — against Seneca Valley and North Hills — in overtime.

The Foxes have averaged 3.2 goals per game so far this season. Fox Chapel has scored at least two goals in every match it has played this season.

Rocco DiDomenico and Sean Regan are tied for the team lead with six goals. Nicolas Squeglia is second with five.

Ingram said the balance in the Foxes’ attack is a tremendous advantage to have.

“It starts at the back with our goalie getting the defense involved,” Ingram said. “If a team is good one way, we can beat them another way.”

Fox Chapel’s only loss came in the season opener, a 3-2 defeat against Canon-McMillan. Ingram thought the Foxes followed up the defeat with a strong performance.

“That was the last game where everyone was healthy,” Ingram said. “Against Mt. Lebanon, we were able to attack well early and we kept our foot on the gas.”

Fox Chapel hasn’t slowed down much in section play. The Foxes buried five goals in their section opener against Pine-Richland.

Fox Chapel followed that up with a nonconference win against neighboring Shady Side Academy before beating Seneca Valley in overtime.

Squeglia scored on a penalty kick in overtime to give the Foxes a 2-1 win.

Ingram was happy with how Fox Chapel battled.

“We didn’t have everyone healthy,” Ingram said. “We battled well in the second half and in overtime.”

The Foxes hope they are on a path to contend for another championship.

“They want to go after the big prize,” Ingram said.
