Carlo Prati didn’t want to take the Seneca Valleys and North Alleghenys of the world off of the Fox Chapel girls soccer schedule. The Foxes coach knew that their stay in Class 3A may not be very long.
Fox Chapel finished this season 20-2-1, winning its second WPIAL title in three years. The Foxes’ season ended Nov. 8 with a 3-1 loss to District 9 champion DuBois in the PIAA quarterfinals.
Next season, Prati said Fox Chapel will be headed back to the largest classification. The Foxes did win Class 4A when they last competed in the division in 2023.
“That’s the reason I didn’t want to take the tougher 4A schools off the schedule,” Prati said. “I didn’t want it to be a shock if we went back up.”
One of those larger schools on the schedule — North Allegheny — handed the Foxes their only regular-season loss during another strong season for Fox Chapel. The Foxes did pick up wins over a pair of 4A powers, Peters Township and Norwin, to close out the regular season.
Led by Pitt commit Emily McKee, who scored 49 goals and now has 108 on her career, the Foxes got revenge on South Fayette in the WPIAL Class 3A title match.
“Emily has always risen to the occasion,” Prati said. “Because of how she’s been playing, she has also been helping her teammates get better.
In the state quarterfinals, Anna Korney, who played for the Pittsburgh Riveters last summer, scored all three of the Beavers’ goals.
DuBois finished with five shots on goal, four of which were taken by Korney. Ava Stackhouse scored Fox Chapel’s goal.
“I didn’t think we played that poorly,” Prati said. “DuBois did a great job finishing their chances. In the first three minutes, we hit the post and they scored 30 seconds later to go ahead.”
The Foxes couldn’t catch a break against the Beavers, hitting the post several times.
“We just didn’t finish our chances,” Prati said.
DuBois, which became the third District 9 girls soccer team to reach the PIAA semifinals, was upended by South Fayette, 6-1.
Fox Chapel — which had to replace six starters this season — was happy to reach the WPIAL final for the third consecutive year.
Prati was happy to see a better performance at Highmark Stadium. The Foxes beat the Lions, 1-0 in overtime, after losing 4-0 to South Fayette in last season’s final.
Lily McLaughlin scored the game winner in the WPIAL final.
“I was happy that we were able to go back and give them a competitive match,” Prati said. “We weren’t competitive against them in the final last season.”
