The Fox Chapel girls golf team fell one shot short of its first WPIAL Class 3A team title since 2021.

The Foxes shot a 345 on Oct. 9 at Cedarbrook Golf Course, finishing one shot behind Peters Township.

Clara Koteski led Fox Chapel by shooting an 11-over par 82. Ava Calandra (85), Abigail Freyvogel (89), London Bitar (89) and Morgan Monteverde (93) rounded out the top five for the Foxes.

The boys team also finished second, tying with North Allegheny four strokes behind South Fayette.

Carson Kittsley, who won the WPIAL Class 3A individual title, led the Foxes by shooting a 3-under par 72.

David DiGregory shot a 77, while Grady Johnson shot a 79. Baron Bitar (82), Reid Gamblin (82) and Anderson Dockey (88) also competed for the Foxes.

A leg up

The race for the longest field goal in WPIAL history continued Oct. 10 between the area’s top two kickers. Fox Chapel kicker Harran Zureikat, who holds the record of 57 yards, attempted a shot at the state record during a 35-0 loss last Friday against Plum.

Near the end of the first quarter, Zureikat tried a 65-yard kick that fell a few yards short.

The state record in Pennsylvania was set by Bishop Hoban’s Gerry McGroarty in 2003 when he made a 64-yard attempt. At the time, McGroarty’s kick was longer than the since-broken NFL record of 63 yards.

Zureikat’s rival for the record, Hopewell’s Rocco Marcantonio, also took his chance of grabbing his record back. Marcantonio attempted a 60-yard field goal during the Vikings’ 38-20 win over Freeport.

Hopewell was ahead 35-7 when Marcantonio, who shared the record at 55 yards for one season, attempted a 60-yard attempt that came up short.

Top dogs

The Shady Side Academy field hockey team defeated Fox Chapel, 3-1, on Oct. 14 to improve to 12-2-1 on the season. Shady Side Academy currently has the top record of all WPIAL Class A schools.

Foxes close with win

Last season, the Fox Chapel girls soccer team dropped two matches before the start of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs. The Foxes hope entering the postseason on a 12-match unbeaten springboard will provide a better run up to landing back on top this year.

Emily McKee and Antonia Linzoian scored for Fox Chapel (15-1-1) to help the Foxes wrap up the regular season with a 2-1 win over Class 4A Norwin on Oct. 15.
