The Fox Chapel boys golf team got off to a strong start during the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A boys individual golf championships at Willowbrook Country Club. Defending PIAA champion Carson Kittsley shot a 6-under par 66 to put himself in first place.
Sophomore Baron Bitar shot a 68 to earn the second spot. Sophomore Reid Gamblin, who shot a 77, finished in a tie for 28th place to advance to the final round.
In the Class 2A boys’ first round, Alex Avi led Shady Side Academy by placing in a tie for fifth place at Hill Crest Country Club. Avi shot a 5-over par 76.
Brawley Niels tied for 20th and Dusyanth Paramesh tied for 34th for the Bulldogs to earn a spot in the final round.
Zhang takes top spot
Shady Side Academy sophomore Alyssa Zhang shot a 1-over par 73 at Seven Oaks Country Club to qualify for the final round of the WPIAL Class 2A girls golf tournament. Harika Reddy also finished 15th to qualify for the next round.
Fox Chapel junior Clara Koteski finished in a tie for sixth place to reach the WPIAL Class 3A final round. Morgan Monteverde also placed 24th for the Foxes to reach the next round.
Bulldogs tripped up
Shady Side Academy’s football team took its first loss of the season Sept. 19. The Bulldogs fell to Apollo-Ridge, 22-14, in Allegheny Conference play. Shady Side Academy (3-1, 1-1) has now played in two games this season that were decided by eight or fewer points.
Field hockey unbeaten
Fox Chapel field hockey (4-0-3) has been off to a good start to the 2025 season. The Foxes have collected some confidence building wins, including one over perennial power Penn-Trafford.
Momentum halted
The Fox Chapel football team closed nonconference play with consecutive wins. Opening Northeast Conference play against traditionally strong programs hasn’t been easy for the Foxes. Penn Hills, which returned a large number of players from injury, beat Fox Chapel 49-15 on Sept. 12.
The Foxes then lost at home to North Hills, 56-7, the following week. Things weren’t set to get any easier with Fox Chapel scheduled to face off with defending WPIAL Class 5A champion Pine-Richland on Sept. 26.
