Fox Chapel Herald notebook: Shady Side Academy’s Javon Johnston impresses at nationals

Shady Side Academy’s Javon Johnston impressed at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Johnston finished in first place in the triple jump in the freshman division, winning the event with a leap of 45 feet, 11.5 inches.

Johnston also finished third in the long jump with a leap of 22-4.

Bulldogs freshman Francesca Pietragallo finished 91st in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.85 seconds. The distance relay team placed 36th with a time of 12:37.34.

Rosen gets time to shine

Adina Rosen had an opportunity to shine during the Western Pennsylvania Softball All-Star Game on June 24 at Plum. Rosen played for Team Black, which lost 7-5 to Team Gold.

Rosen played in the outfield. Team Black took its only lead when Avonworth’s Sydney Savatt homered in the top of the first inning.

Team Gold scored the next six runs to take a lead it never lost. Team Black rallied in the sixth inning of the eight-inning contest behind a three-run home run from New Castle’s Olivia Hood and an RBI single from Norwin’s Rachel Minteer.

Jablon gets offers

Lyla Jablon, a guard on Fox Chapel’s girls basketball team, has had a busy summer. She was named to the all-star team at the Dalila Eshe Bulldog Elite Camp at Yale. She also has picked up a number of offers from Division III schools.

Jablon has been offered by John Carroll, Baldwin Wallace, Saint Vincent and Chatham.

Thompson joins staff

Jordan Thompson will be the offensive line coach for the Fox Chapel football team during the upcoming season. Thompson is a teacher at Highlands.

Fox Chapel finished 2-7 last season. The Foxes picked up a 16-14 win over East Allegheny during their season finale.
