Fox Chapel wrestlers gearing up for postseason tournaments

The Fox Chapel wrestling team is grateful to have a few weeks between the end of its dual season and the start of the individual wrestling tournaments. The Foxes’ lineup accrued a large number of bumps and bruises throughout the season.

Fox Chapel coach Michael Frank said he has been most concerned with getting some athletes more rest.

“It’s hard because a lot of them are eager to get back out there,” Frank said. “But we’re hoping them taking some time off will help provide a push and a spark toward the start of the individual season.”

Fox Chapel has one more nonsection dual meet on the schedule, when it hosts Shaler on Feb. 11, before the North section tournament Feb. 14 at Butler.

In the meantime, the contingent the Foxes took to the Frank Ferguson Brooke Classic in Brooke, W.Va., produced some strong performances. The Foxes placed fourth as a team.

Three Fox Chapel wrestlers — Andrew Kratsa (150 pounds), Calyx Kimbrough (157) and Joey Geller (215) — reached the finals.

Kimbrough, who improved to 22-7 on the season, beat Seneca Valley’s Dean Sauers, 15-4, in the championship match. Kimbrough has already surpassed his career best for wins in a season. Winning at Brooke also gave Kimbrough his first individual tournament victory. He placed third at 150 pounds at Brooke last season.

“Calyx has a great mindset,” Frank said. “West Virginia has some different weight classes, so wrestling 157 pounds was actually probably better for him. He’s one of the lightest 160-pound wrestlers. It showed him he can compete at the highest level.”

Geller reaching the finals inched him closer to his goal of hitting the 100-win mark. He has a team-high 25 wins and is six short of the century mark.

Geller is on pace to set a new career-best for wins in a season after he finished with a 27-14 record last year.

“It’s feasible,” Frank said. “We really want to help get him there and reach that goal. Joey is a three-sport athlete and has battled through some injuries. He grinded through football season and will go right into baseball after he’s done with wrestling.”

Kratsa, a senior, didn’t wrestle in the final due to an injury. He is 21-10 and topped 20 wins for the first time.

Sophomore Luke Krushinski (23 wins), junior Luke Montgomery (20) and senior Daniel Noel (20) have also topped more than 20 wins for the Foxes.

Frank said he is hoping to get everyone as healthy as they can be during the postseason.

“It’s been nice to have this time without the team playoffs that we had the last few years where we can rest some guys,” Frank said. “Once the individual tournaments starts, it’s a grind every weekend.”
