Fox Chapel junior Carson Kittsley has a chance to do something that has not been done in 84 years, win a PIAA golf championship three times.
Kittsley and Elizabeth Forward senior Mya Morgan successfully defended their Class 3A titles Tuesday at Penn State University.
Kittsley won in dramatic fashion. After watching Latrobe senior Jack Sacriponte eagle the final hole to tie for the lead, Kittsley birdied the final hole to take the title. He finished 8-under-par and Sacriponte 7-under.
The only male to win three titles is John Markel of Reading (1939, 1940 and 1941).
Kittsleyalso became the fifth two-time champion, joining a list that includes Arnold Palmer (Latrobe), Jeff Dickson (Knoch) and Garrett Browning (West Allegheny).
“It was pretty exciting and emotional,” Kittsley said. “After watching Jack, I stayed focused on what I had to do.”
Kittsley said a 12-foot par putt on No. 17 was huge in setting him up for the big finish.
He hit a drive to within 150 yards and then hit his approach chip to within 20 feet and two-putted for birdie.
Sacriponte, playing in front of Kittsley, said he knew he had to make eagle.
Sacriponte hit a good drive and then hit 8-iron from 178 yards to 10 feet and made a sliding left-to-right putt.
“I played a great final round,” Sacriponte said. “I did my best.”
Sacriponte was the highest Latrobe finisher since Palmer won back-to-back titles (1946-47).
“Now my focus is on next year,” Kittsley said. “Being a three-time champion would be special.”
Kittsley joins Frank Fuhrer II, Calay James and Michelle Michanowicz as PIAA champions. Michanowicz was a two-time champion.
Nico Ward of West Allegheny and Ravi Desai tied for sixth at 1-over, Ty Hartman of Thomas Jefferson and Sam Bishop of South Fayette tied for ninth at 2-over and Kiski Area senior Max Mottura finished 16th after a 4-under 68. He finished 3-over.
Morgan rules
Morgan used a strong first round to build a comfortable lead to claim her second title.
Morgan finished 3-under. Peters Township senior Ellie Benson placed fourth at 4-over.
“I am proud of myself,” Morgan said. “I am proud to represent the WPIAL. I feel the WPIAL does not get the respect it deserves.
“I did not feel any pressure. The was pressure on social media, but I did not let things bother me. I had already won one title no matter what happened.”
Sikora, Zheng finish with bronze medals
Greensburg Salem sophomore Luke Sikora and Shady Side Academy sophomore Alyssa Zhang placed third in Class 2A.
Sikora finished 4-under. Cole Powell of Scranton Prep won by shooting 7-under, and Anthony LaBoda of Fairview was second a 5-under.
WPIAL champion Jonah Schollaert was fourth at even-par, and Neshannock’s Rocco Bautti was fifth at 1-over.
“I am happy,” Sikora said. “I played better on Monday. I made too many mistakes in the second round.
“This tournament showed me on what I must work. I want to come back a lot sharper next year.”
Zheng was in a battle all day with St. Joseph’s Madison Koshko and West Middlesex’s Kate Sowers.
At the end of the round, Koshko finished 8-under, Sowers 7-under and Zheng 6-under.
Greensburg Central Catholic senior Alayna Stawovy tied for sixth at 8-over, and North Catholic’s Riley Kontul and Chartiers-Houston’s JoJo Jaskulski tied for 10th at 13-over.
The PIAA team championship is Wednesday.
