Joey Geller had done the math for what is possible for his senior season at Fox Chapel. If he can continue his progression, he should have an opportunity to make a run at finishing with 100 wins.

Geller, a 215-pound senior wrestler, finished 27-15 last season and has 69 wins in his career.

“I need to stay healthy,” Geller said. “I’m going to have to do better at the Allegheny County tournament. I started 3-0 last year and finished 3-3. I need to do better at the Southmoreland tournament. I need to turn those six or seven matches into wins.”

Geller will join many of his Fox Chapel teammates in looking for incremental progress. The Foxes, who were a section title contender during the past two seasons, will be looking to rebuild.

Fox Chapel lost its lone state qualifier, Michael Worsen, to graduation. The Foxes also lost WPIAL qualifiers Jack Viti, Landon Funk, D’Angelo Hamilton, Milo Chiu and Youssef Abdelsalam.

The Foxes made the WPIAL playoffs last season before losing to North Allegheny in the first round.

“I knew it was coming,” Fox Chapel coach Michael Frank said. “I was prepared for it. But when we had the first practice about a week ago, you noticed it because of all of the new faces walking through the door.”

Geller said he’s been working more on being in a leadership role.

“It’ll be an adjustment,” Geller said. “We have a strong senior class. We are still going to be a strong team.”

Part of Geller’s chase for 100 wins will involve getting off to a good start. Geller, who started at quarterback for the football team, said getting back into wrestling shape can be a grind. He does feel more prepared for it entering this season.

Geller said he recently wrestled in the West Penn duals at the Monroeville Convention Center for the Mat Factory.

“Football shape isn’t even close to wrestling shape,” Geller said. “It’s been a big jump going from football to wrestling. I’m good now that we’re a few weeks in. The first week is tough to get back into it.”

Frank said he expects fellow seniors Daniel Noel and Calyx Kimbrough to also fill holes in the lineup.

Fox Chapel will see a lot of changes throughout the season. Frank believes it will take some time before they find their ideal lineup.

“We have a lot of young guys who are ready to work,” Frank said. “It’s hard to know right now where everyone is going to settle in. We are going to have a lineup where about half of the kids are seeing varsity wrestling for the first time. We are looking forward to the competition.”
