Fox Chapel’s Shymansky advances to PIAA singles semifinals

WPIAL champion Robby Shymansky breezed to a pair of victories at the PIAA Class AAA singles tournament at Hershey Racquet Club on Friday, advancing to the semifinal round.

The Fox Chapel senior defeated Hershey’s Andreas Wingert, 6-1, 6-0, and then beat Unionville’s Ethan Bradley, 6-1, 6-0. He will take on Unionville’s Tristan Bradley in the semifinals at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The winner moves on to the 3 p.m. finals.

Also in the Class AAA singles tournament, Allderdice’s David Missry lost in the quarterfinals, and Sewickley Academy’s Arjan Bedi and Obama Academy’s Sachin Thiagarajan fell in the first round.

A pair of WPIAL doubles teams also advanced to the PIAA semifinals Friday. Shady Side Academy’s Naman Dua and Colin Gramley, the WPIAL champions, won two matches in straight sets, as did Peters Township’s Connor Bruce and Ellan Ascencio. Both teams will be in action at 10:30 a.m. in the semifinals. If they both advance, they will face off in the finals at 3 p.m.

All six WPIAL representatives lost in the first round of the Class AA tournaments. Indiana’s Zachary Palko, Thomas Jefferson’s Yash Maheshwari and Valley’s Michael Odrey lost singles matches in straight sets.

In Class AA doubles, Quaker Valley’s tandems of Zach Alberts and John Watters and Potter Oliver and Will Sirianni fell short, along with South Park’s Joey Toth and Stone Ellis.
