Franklin Regional notebook: Panthers earn WPIAL football playoff berth

Franklin Regional football suffered another close loss Oct. 18 when it dropped a 27-17 decision to first-place Woodland Hills.

Kyle Dupill rushed for 208 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers. Dupill’s 12-yard touchdown run gave the Panthers a 10-7 lead in the third quarter.

Joey Bayne booted a 29-yard field goal and Jude Gentile scored on a 16-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Scoop Smith scored three touchdowns for Woodland Hills.

Franklin Regional concluded the regular season Oct. 25 against Armstrong.

The Panthers clinched a berth in the WPIAL playoffs which begin Nov. 1.

Panthers suffer first loss

They say all good things must come to an end.

That’s what happened to the Franklin Regional hockey team.

After starting the season 3-0, the Panthers (3-1) dropped a 6-2 decision to Upper St. Clair (2-1-1) in PIHL Class 3A action Oct. 21.

USC scored two goals in each of the first two periods to grab a 4-0 lead.

Franklin Regional got on the board 50 seconds into the third period on a goal by Tyler Spears. Joey Casella had the assist. USC’s Nico Galardini scored five minutes later to push the lead to 5-1. Dylan Yearly scored the first two goals for Upper St. Clair.

Brian Compton scored for the FR Panthers midway through the third period with an assist from Brendan Yohe and Spears, but the Panthers could not get any closer.

Franklin Regional will play at Mt. Lebanon on Oct. 31 and then host Seneca Valley on Nov. 5.

Holt competes in PIAA championship

Franklin Regional junior Colin Holt is looking forward to next year’s PIAA Class 3A golf championship after placing 47th at the 2024 event at Penn State’s White Course.

Holt finished with an 8-over par 152. Fox Chapel junior Carson Kittsley won the title by shooting an 8-under 136.

Holt shot a 2-over 74 during the first round Oct. 21. He had three birdies (Nos. 6, 11 and 18).

He struggled a little during the second round Oct. 22, shooting a 6-over 78. He had three birdies during the round (Nos. 3, 15 and 18).

Panthers into semifinals

Franklin Regional entered the WPIAL Class 3A boys soccer playoffs seeded No. 7.

The Panthers advanced to the WPIAL semifinals with a 3-0 win against No. 10 Trinity and a thrilling 2-1 win against No. 2 Thomas Jefferson on Oct. 23.

Franklin Regional was to face No. 6 Mars on Oct. 28.

Lady Panthers fall in OT

The Franklin Regional girls soccer team saw its season end with a 3-2 overtime loss to No. 8 Montour on Oct. 21.

The Panthers were seeded No. 9.
