It was not the season that Lance Getsy and the Franklin Regional football team hoped for.
The Panthers closed out the season with a 41-14 loss at Armstrong on Oct. 24. The only win came against Fox Chapel, 21-10, on Oct. 3.
It was a season of growth for the young Panthers, especially sophomore quarterback Dominic Devola.
He completed 55 of 123 passes for 588 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions.
His main targets were junior Tyrone Leonard, 15 catches for 142 yards, and senior Jaymeir Austin, 10 catches for 137 yards.
Junior running back Jet Taylor was the leading rusher with 692 yards. Devola rushed for 268 and sophomore Amauri Jones-Lane ran for 255.
Tip of the cap
Joey Casella scored a hat trick to lead the Franklin Regional hockey team to its first win of the season Oct. 20.
In the process, the Panthers (1-2) handed Central Catholic (3-1) its first loss of the season, 5-4.
Casella opened the scoring in the first period and then tied the score 3-3 early in the third period.
After J.J. Tensuan scored to five the Panthers a 4-3 lead, Central Catholic’s David Ketterer tied the score 4-4.
But Casella scored at the 15:25 mark to give the Panthers the win.
Brendan Yohe also scored for the Panthers while Ryan Crouse (2), Liam Murphy, Ashton Mahaven, Grant Williams and Ryland Kase added assists.
The Panthers couldn’t start a winning streak, though, and lost 7-1 to Mt. Lebanon three days later.
Crouse scored the Panthers’ lone goal with an assist from Casella.
Mt. Lebanon scored three goals in the first period and added three more in the third period.
Cameron Mayer and Xavier Bias each scored twice in the victory.
