A pair of WPIAL Class 3A football teams continued to streak in opposite directions Friday night as Freeport stayed unbeaten, and Valley remained without a victory.
The Yellowjackets settled matters early, scoring all their points in the first quarter of a 42-7 victory to ensure a running clock in the second half.
“It’s just part of the game,” Freeport coach John Gaillot said. “I like it when it’s closer because everyone’s engaged. But I thought our guys, for the most part, stayed engaged. You just don’t want to get any injuries.”
Amos Glenn scored four touchdowns during Freeport’s early spree, and the unranked Yellowjackets (6-0, 3-0) gained sole possession of first place in the Allegheny 7 Conference over No. 2 Imani Christian.
The Saints (6-0, 2-0) defeated No. 3 North Catholic, 36-16, in a nonconference game featuring previously undefeated teams.
Freeport returns home for a string of three consecutive games, beginning Friday against Highlands, before visiting Imani Christian on Oct. 24 in the season finale.
“We just want our respect. That’s all,” Glenn said. “If we don’t get our respect, we’ll just prove it. That’s all we’re going to do is come out here week by week and get our wins and we’ll earn our respect.”
The outcome extended Freeport’s unbeaten streak to six and spoiled homecoming night for Valley, which hasn’t won since beating Uniontown on Sept. 22, 2023, a span of 21 games.
The Vikings (0-6, 0-2) dropped their 19th consecutive conference decision dating to an Oct. 8, 2021, victory over Derry.
Freeport, which outgained Valley in total offensive yards 168-39, entered the night having outscored its opponents by nearly 37 points per game.
Valley, meanwhile, was yielding an average of 33.6.
A week after Valley’s Brendon Knuckles returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown in a 29-20 loss to Quaker Valley, the Vikings were victimized by Glenn’s 85-yard kickoff return to open the game.
It was the first of four Freeport touchdowns on the Yellowjackets’ first four possessions.
“It’s always good to set the tone when we score first,” Glenn said. “It keeps all our players fresh, and everyone’s ready to go for defense. It really sets the tone for everybody.”
Valley twice failed to move the sticks on its first two possessions and had punts blocked both times by Bryson Paga, leading to a pair of Freeport scores that gave the Yellowjackets an early 21-0 lead.
On the first play after Paga’s first block, Glenn rushed 11 yards for a touchdown, then Dawson Gaillot recovered Paga’s second block in the end zone for another score.
Glenn’s 24-yard run and 53-yard punt return and Drew Ross’ 15-yard pass to Owen Neistein completed the flurry of first-quarter scoring for Freeport.
The pass play occurred after Freeport’s Luke Selinger recovered a Valley fumble.
Valley scored its lone touchdown in the second quarter against mainly Freeport reserves on a 10-yard run by Juzef Betts.
“Just needed to get those guys some reps,” Gaillot said. “They hung in for a while, then gave up that one touchdown.”
Glenn alone produced return yardage totaling nearly 200 yards for Freeport.
The kickoff return was the fourth of the season for the 5-foot-7, 160-pound speedster, who also has returned three punts for touchdowns, including two against Quaker Valley in the Yellowjackets’ 42-7 victory on Sept. 5.
