Cager Classic set for April 5
The 28th annual Cager Classic, featuring senior basketball players from Allegheny, Armstrong, Butler and Westmoreland counties, will be held at Highlands High School.
Practice is April 3, the skills competition April 4 and the games — 5:30 p.m. for the girls and 7:30 p.m. for the boys — April 5.
The skills competition will comprise a 3-point shooting contest and a hot shot contest, where a participant will have 45 seconds and eight locations on the floor.
Each team will have an MVP, and the winner will receive a $500 scholarship. Two more scholarships can be earned through an essay contest.
“We just want the players to have fun,” organizer Bill Heasley said. “In the past, the girls have played a little more physical than the boys. But it is a chance for kids to play with players who were rivals.”
Tickets are $4 for students and $7 for adults.
The Cager Classic features seniors from Apollo-Ridge, Armstrong, Burrell, Butler, Cheswick Christian, Deer Lakes, Fox Chapel, Franklin Regional, Hampton, Highlands, Kiski Area, Leechburg, Mars, Plum, Riverview, Springdale, St. Joseph, Valley and West Shamokin.
Both East teams were winners in 2024.
