Girls complete Plum sweep of WPIBL team championships

Plum completed a sweep at the WPIBL girls team bowling championships Thursday at AMF Mt. Lebanon Lanes.

A day after the Mustangs won the boys team title, the girls team defeated Hempfield in a three-game final to repeat as WPIBL champions.

Plum was the top team all day, dominating qualifying with a three-game total of 2,845. Hempfield was second with a 2,589 total, followed by Deer Lakes with a 2,342.

Hempfield swept Deer Lakes in the semifinals, winning 174-162 and 183-124.

Plum opened the best-of-three finals with a commanding 211-149 victory, but Hempfield fired back with a 174-167 win in Game 2. The Mustangs were back on their game in the winner-take-all third game, prevaling 195-136.

Addison Then led Plum in qualifying with a 618 series, making the all-tournament team. Hempfield’s Amelia Droste was the top bowler in qualifying with a 691 series. Sydney Sharkins was second with a 656 and Kiski Area’s Veronica Flanagan third with a 638. Hempfield’s Ashley Bensur also made the all-tournament team with a 597 series.

Latrobe finished fourth in qualifying with a score of 2,296, followed by Butler with a 2,184.

Freeport (2,140), Kiski Area (2,134), Montour (2,088), Valley (2,018) and Norwin (2,010) rounded out the top 10.

The WPIBL boys and girls singles championships are scheduled for next Wednesday and Thursday at AMF Mt. Lebanon Lanes.
