From the opening kickoff, Quaker Valley’s nonconference game against Freeport on Friday night at Chuck Knox Stadium shaped up a lot differently than the Quakers’ first two games, both victories.

The Yellowjackets (3-0) returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and avoided disaster after two early turnovers in a 42-7 victory over Quaker Valley on senior night.

Amos Glenn found space down the right sideline and got a few great blocks to spring him for the opening score. This was the second week in a row Glenn returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

“(Glenn) is amazing. He can just turn it on,” Freeport coach John Gaillot said. “I don’t have any words to describe it.”

Said QV coach Tom Eshenbaugh: “We did not want to kick to (Glenn), and we did, for apparent reasons. He’s a great returner. We lacked some discipline, and it just snowballed from there.”

Quaker Valley (2-1) struggled to find consistency on offense early and gave the ball back to Freeport. But Glenn fumbled on a long run, giving the ball back to the Quakers.

QV punted when the drive stalled, and Glenn tried to spark Freeport again. This time, he raced 94 yards on a punt return to the Quaker Valley 1-yard line. But Drew Ross fumbled, and the ’Jackets failed to cash in.

“We were a little sloppy at first. We let some things go,” Gaillot said. “We let them back into the game but we responded. We just need to clean some stuff up.”

It was Freeport’s turn to force a turnover as Quaker QB Atticus Barr was intercepted. Ross got some redemption on the following drive with a 7-yard TD run to make it 14-0.

Another Quaker Valley turnover early in the second quarter, allowed Freeport to march into scoring range again. This time, it was Glenn on the ground with a 6-yard touchdown run for a 21-0 Yellowjackets advantage with 10 minutes, 8 seconds left until halftime.

Quaker Valley finally got things going late in the half. Ben McHenry took a double reverse inside handoff and scampered 58 yards down the sideline then across the field, outrunning several defenders for a score. McHenry added the extra point making it 21-7 with 1:39 left until half.

“Our goal with the wing-T offense is to slow the game down, pick up 2-3 yards, use that clock and do a little misdirection,” Eshenbaugh said. “It’s hard to tell who has the football. That play is the way we want to execute on every play.”

However, the Quakers’ momentum was short-lived. Glenn set Freeport up in great field position and Ross went to work, moving the Yellowjackets down the field before the half. Then with, just 7 seconds left, Ross found Bryson Paga on a quick slant for a 7-yard touchdown. The extra point put Freeport up 28-7.

Glenn added two short touchdown runs in the second half to ice the game.

The two teams kick off conference play next week as Freeport takes on Deer Lakes in 3A Allegheny 7 play, and Quaker Valley hosts North Catholic in the 3A Western Hills.
