Midway through the 2020s, Greensburg Central Catholic is closing in on clinching school-of-the-decade honors in Class A after claiming a second consecutive Class A Trib Cup, its fifth in the last six years.
The Centurions remain alone in third place overall after winning the schools 11th Sports Cup, trailing only North Allegheny (22) and Sewickley Academy (13).
“Achieving the 11th Trib Cup at GCC is a great honor,” Greensburg Central Catholic athletic director Dan Mahoney said. “We are extremely proud of our student-athletes and coaches. It has been a great experience serving as athletic director at GCC.”
The Trib Cup is a yearlong competition in 25 team sports to determine the top WPIAL sports program in each classification. Schools earn points for section or conference championships, WPIAL playoff berths and district postseason success, state playoff berths and PIAA championships.
Greensburg Central Catholic earned points in 13 sports to finish an impressive 140 points ahead of Class A runner-up Winchester Thurston.
A big part of the GCC cup run was fueled by the Centurions girls volleyball team. This past fall, the Centurions captured a fourth WPIAL Class A championship, the program’s first district title in eight years.
They followed up with a third PIAA state championship a few weeks later.
“The girls volleyball team had a great core of seniors that dedicated themselves to winning the WPIAL and PIAA titles,” Mahoney said. “They set their goals early and finished strong.”
The volleyball team wasn’t the only Centurions squad to bring home gold. The Greensburg Central Catholic girls basketball stunned top-seeded Shady Side Academy in the Class 3A district title game, 56-51, to win the program’s second straight and seventh overall girls basketball crown.
“The girls basketball team and coaches had a great season and continued their momentum in winning their second straight WPIAL championship,” Mahoney said.
Those two championships, plus big years by the Greensburg Central Catholic boys and girls golf teams, boys basketball squad, baseball and boys and girls track teams allowed the school to repeat and finish in first place with nearly 100 more points than last year.
“Achieving this many Trib Cups reflects our student-athletes’ dedication and commitment towards their specific sports and in the classroom,” Mahoney said.
Rounding out the Top 5 in Class A were Winchester Thurston in second place, Union in third, Serra Catholic in fourth and Riverview in fifth place.
