Winning three consecutive WPIAL championships is the main thing that drives Erica Gribble going into her senior season at Greensburg Central Catholic. But there are quite a few other incentives for the star point guard.
She is eyeing three significant scoring marks.
A 5-foot-11 Richmond commit, Gribble has 1,714 career points. She can break GCC’s career scoring records for the girls and boys, and reaching 2,000 career points would put her on a short list of all-time volume scorers.
Gribble needs 12 points to top Ashley Henderson’s girls scoring record of 1,725 points and can break the school record of 1,751 points set by Franco Sebastiani.
Henderson and Sebastiani both set the records in 2007.
The plan is to get the pageantry over shortly after the season tips off at the North Allegheny tournament. GCC plays South Fayette and Mt. Lebanon.
“I want to get it over with early on,” Gribble said. “I hope to get the women’s record in the first game and the men’s in the second. Then we can focus on the rest of the season.”
Gribble also will likely take her place among the greatest scorers in Westmoreland County history. She needs 586 points for 2,000.
Only six girls have scored 2,000 points in Westmoreland history. They are WPIAL all-time scoring leader Gina Naccarato of Monessen (3,364), Charel Allen of Monessen (3,110), Vanessa Abel of Southmoreland (2,327), Ciara Gregory of Jeannette (2,130), Jen Sabota of Latrobe (2,072) and Danielle Dawson of Greensburg Salem (2,007).
GCC coach Chris Skatell has enjoyed watching Gribble blossom into one of the league’s top players.
“She’s had a great offseason,” Skatell said. “I like to coach every game like it’s the WPIAL final. But I see coaches joystick their team. There are games where your players can’t hear you. I want (Gribble) to take ownership of what’s going on on the floor. When we need a bucket, and the place is going crazy, I need her to get everyone on the same page.
“We have a very selfless team.”
