Erica Gribble

Jr., G, Greensburg Central Catholic

Even a second straight WPIAL championship doesn’t fully appease Erica Gribble. It doesn’t quite satisfy her appetite.

Division I talents such as Gribble always seem to want more — from themselves, from their teammates, from their next goal.

“I want to be more physical, not just make 3s and jumpers,” she said. “I want to keep getting better. I want to be more physical getting to the hole.”

The playmaking junior point guard from Greensburg Central Catholic was an easy choice for TribLive Westmoreland Girls Basketball Player of the Year after leading GCC to a WPIAL 3A title a year after the Centurions took the 2A championship.

Gribble averaged 22.4 points per game and increased her career total to 1,714, 11 shy of the GCC girls school record of 1,725 set by 2007 alum Ashley Henderson.

A Richmond commit, Gribble took over games, including a thrilling, 56-51 victory over then-undefeated Shady Side Academy in the WPIAL final at Petersen Events Center. She poured in 31 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter when GCC rallied past the defending champion Bulldogs.

She made 12 of 24 shots and swiped five steals as GCC won its seventh WPIAL title.

The Centurions finally ran out of gas in the PIAA second round, falling to a much-improved Our Lady of the Sacred Heart team, 36-34, to finish 22-6.

“We wanted the (WPIAL) championship, but we wanted something more,” Gribble said. “We wanted to do more in states.”

While a WPIAL three-peat will be on the docket next winter for GCC, Gribble also will try to break the school scoring record.

“I had no clue I was that close,” she said. “I would like to try to get that early in the season, but I want us to keep winning as a team and win more in states. I have more motivation for that next year.”
