Alayna Stawovy had not played well at Champion Lakes Golf Course in Boliver before Thursday’s Westmoreland County Coaches’ Association girls championship.

But with a different mindset, the Greensburg Central Catholic senior played a relaxed round and ended up winning the annual event.

Stawovy shot a 1-under-par 38 to edge teammate Kennedy Kelly, who shot a 40. Norwin’s Adalena Robb (41) and Franklin Regional teammates Gianna Johnson (43) and Athena Neuschwander (43) were next.

Also earning medals were Latrobe’s Gia Petrazio (46), Kat Devito (48), Ligonier Valley’s Addy Witcoski (48), Hempfield’s Hailey Unrinek (49) and Mt. Pleasant’s Victoria Tepper (49).

Greensburg Central Catholic was the Class 2A team winner with 183 points, and Franklin Regional took the 3A title with 194.

Stawovy overcame a double-bogey 7 on No. 2 and bogeys on Nos. 6 and 8. She had birdies on Nos. 3, 4 and 9.

“This is normally my worst round every year,” Stawovy said. “It was a different day. I had a good mindset, and I stayed positive out there the entire time.

“I was hitting the ball well, and putts were falling. It was a good day overall.”

Stawovy joins a group of former GCC golfers to win the title. The others include Izzy Aiger, Angelika Dewicki, Meghan Zambruno, Olivia Zambruno and Abby Zambruno.

“I am happy to join the list of previous winners,” Stawovy said. “I went out and had fun.”

The players had to deal with changing weather conditions. Early on there was rain, then sun and then the final few holes the wind picked up.

Kennedy had a tough stretch in the middle of her round with bogeys on Nos. 4, 5 and 6. She had a feeling she would do well.

“I kind of knew it was going to be a good day on the range,” Kennedy said. “I was fine with anything in the low 40s, so I am definitely happy.”

Robb and Johnson were paired and battled back and forth. Robb had bogeys on Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 7. Johnson, the 2023 winner, had bogies on Nos. 3, 4 and 9 and a triple-bogey 7 on No. 6.

Johnson was a four-time medalist. She placed second in 2024 and third in 2022.

Robb and Johnson were somewhat disappointed with their finish. But both said there are bigger goals ahead.

“I hit the ball well,” Robb said. “I only had one bad shot. I just need to be dialed in with the short putts. I missed a couple short ones.”

Johnson said: “It was good. I wish I had a couple of shots back. The wind affected some shots late.”
