Greensburg Salem boys, Hempfield girls capture state bowling championships

It was a Westmoreland County sweep at the Pennsylvania high school bowling championships Saturday at Bowlero Pittsburgh, with Hempfield winning the girls team title and Greensburg Salem winning on the boys side.

Hempfield’s girls were first in qualifying (3,770) and swept Plum in the best-of-three finals. Greensburg Salem also topped qualifying (3,956) and swept Armstrong in the finals.

The top four teams in qualifying make the finals. On the girls side, Plum (3,726) was second, followed by Governor Mifflin (3,670) and Norwin (3,525).

Governor Mifflin swept Norwin in the quarterfinals, 179-158 and 149-115. In the semifinals, Plum defeated Governor Mifflin in three games, winning the first 169-128, losing the second 172-136 and taking the third 149-134.

Hempfield swept the finals by scores of 175-138 and 222-169.

It was a sweep of girls state titles for Hempfield junior Amelia Droste, who won the singles championship Friday.

On the boys side, Greensburg Salem was followed by Armstrong (3,947), Pennsbury (3,896) and York School of Technology (3,820) in qualifying.

In the quarterfinals, Pennsbury swept York School of Technology, 191-167 and 108-95 in a tiebreaker after the teams tied 163-163. In the semifinals, Armstrong beat Pennsbury, 182-178, in the first game, lost 203-170 in the second game and won 176-126 in the third.

Greensburg Salem swept Armstrong by scores of 201-181 and 179-155.

The last Western PA teams to win state titles were North Allegheny in 2021 on the boys side and Plum in 2016 on the girls side.
