For the second consecutive match, Sadie Sarver picked up a key victory for the Greensburg Salem wrestling team.
Sarver recorded a first-period pin, one of five by the team, and Greensburg Salem won its first WPIAL Class 2A match since 2018 with a 41-29 preliminary-round victory against Knoch.
The Golden Lions advanced to take on No. 1 Burrell in a first-round match Wednesday.
Sarver, who wrestles for the boys since Greensburg Salem doesn’t have a girls team, pinned Emmett Cardongco in the first period with a half-nelson. The match started at 121 pounds.
In fact, she wasn’t the only Greensburg Salem wrestler to pin their opponent with the half-nelson.
“Our opponents were pinning us with the half-nelson in recent years, and we told we could do the same,” Greensburg Salem coach Randy Parsley said. “Sadie walked out there and got it started. She did that against Ligonier Valley. It was a big win for us.
“She has turned her season around since the county meet. Hopefully, it can get her going.”
The other wrestlers to record pins were Noah Summerville (139), Gabriel Doppelhauer (145), Elijah Miller (160) and Ethan Miller (172). Chase Lenart (189) won by forfeit as Greensburg Salem opened up a 36-19 lead.
“We’re up above and beyond what I expected coming into this season,” Parsley said. “We pin, and that keeps us in a match to balance out the four forfeits. I feel pretty good when we wrestle most of the teams.
“We have great kids who are good with the half. I don’t care how good an opponent is, if you run the half for two or three minutes, you eventually tire them out. This is a young group that hasn’t tasted a lot of success. Getting the win was huge for us.”
Knoch was able to close to within 36-29, but Andrew Pohland sealed the victory with a 16-1 technical fall win against Caden Hassler at 114.
“Our kids are getting tougher,” Parsley said. “It was a big win for the wrestlers and the program.”
Knoch is 0-3 in the WPIAL playoffs.
Greensburg Salem’s last playoff win came against North Allegheny in 2018.
