H.S. roundup: North Allegheny softball edges Hempfield

Alaina Whipkey hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a tie, and the No. 1-ranked North Allegheny softball team held on to defeat Hempfield, 4-3, in Section 2-6A on Wednesday.
Rachel Martindale gave North Allegheny a 3-0 lead with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Hempfield tied the score 3-3 on a three-run homer by Jessica Persin in the top of the fifth inning.
Winning pitcher Ashley Adams struck out six for North Allegheny (10-1, 8-1). Callie Sowers struck out seven for Hempfield (6-5, 6-3).
Connellsville 8, Franklin Regional 0 — Jenna Hixson had three hits and three RBIs, and Connellsville (6-3, 5-2) earned a key victory in Section 1-5A.
Winning pitcher Mia Burd held Franklin Regional (6-5, 5-3) to four hits and struck out 8.
Mallory Halleck had a double and triple for Franklin Regional.
Penn-Trafford 9, Albert Gallatin 8 (8 inn.) — For the second consecutive game, No. 1 Penn-Trafford needed a late rally to pull out a win.
The Warriors (9-0, 8-0) scored in the bottom of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Nedley.
Albert Gallatin (3-6, 3-5) tied the score 8-8 in the top of the seventh inning on a three-run home run by Abby Vance.
Emma Armstrong homered for the second consecutive game for Penn-Trafford during a five-run sixth inning. Hannah Allen had a three-run hit during the inning for the Warriors.
Mt. Pleasant 6, Indiana 2 — Sydney Kanuch hit a two-run home run, and No. 1 Mt. Pleasant rolled in Section 1-4A.
Mt. Pleasant had 11 hits, including a triple and five doubles. Haylie Brunson had two doubles for the Vikings (10-0, 6-0).
Indiana fell to 6-4, 3-3.
Yough 3, Highlands 0 — Kierra Waywood threw a six-hit shutout and struck out 10 to lead Yough to a Section 1-4A victory.
Waywood had three hits, including a double. Hannah Christner and Savannah Manns also doubled for the Cougars.
Manns had two RBIs.
Latrobe 10, Armstrong 0 — Jordan Tallman threw a two-hit shutout and struck out 13 to lead Latrobe to a Section 1-4A victory.
Ashley Noel had two hits and three RBIs. Makayla Munchinski had three RBIs for the Wildcats.
Derry 15, Valley 1 — Alanna Meloy hit a grand slam to pace Derry to a rout of Valley in Section 1-3A.
Maddie Berger had three hits for Derry (3-6, 3-3).
Norwin 13, Fox Chapel 1 — Makenzie Mihalko had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs to lead Norwin (7-3, 6-2) to a Section 2-6A victory.
Sara Russell had three hits, including a triple, for the Knights.
Winning pitcher Sydney Lokay allowed two hits and struck out eight.
West Greene 20, California 2 — The top-ranked Class A Pioneers scored 15 runs in the first inning en route to a three-inning victory in Section 2-A.
Kaitlyn Rizor drove in three runs for the Pioneers (8-3, 5-0).
Montour 10, Chartiers Valley 0 — A three-run homer by Ona Lee Tomczak sparked Montour (6-4, 6-2) in Section 3-5A.
Baseball
Ringgold 9, Uniontown 0 — Nate Pajak tossed a one-hit shutout, and Bob Boyer and Koby Bulbagh each had three RBIs, and Ringgold (6-3, 5-1) won in Section 3-4A.
Boyer and Bulbagh each had two doubles.
Wyatt Rishel had the only hit for Uniontown (2-5, 2-4).
Derry 6, Indiana 5 — Ryan Hood’s two-run walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored two runs, and Derry (3-5, 2-4) picked up a needed victory in Section 1-4A.
Indiana (0-11, 0-6) had rallied in the top of the seventh inning to take a 5-3 lead.
Josh Ulery and Hood each had two hits for the Trojans.
Branden Kanick had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs for Indiana.
Greensburg Salem 15, Mt. Pleasant 3 — The Golden Lions used an eight-run third inning to snap a 3-3 score and rolled to a Section 1-4A victory.
Winning pitcher Matt Wicker went 4 for 4 with two home runs and six RBIs for Greensburg Salem (8-1, 4-1). Jack Oberdorf had a triple, single and three RBIs.
Joe Shrum had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for Mt. Pleasant (4-5, 3-3).
Charleroi 3, Southmoreland 2 (8 inn.) — Andrew Eckels singled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Charleroi (4-5, 2-3) a Section 3-3A victory.
Anthony Govern and Brok Potoka had two hits for Southmoreland (2-7, 0-5).
Shane Barber doubled for the Cougars.
Highlands 4, Knoch 3 — Noah Gillette helped Highlands overcome eight errors by pitching five innings, allowing only three unearned runs and adding a pair of RBIs in a Section 1 victory over Class 4A No. 4 Knoch (7-2, 3-2).
Gillette had two strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Highlands (7-4, 3-3) scored twice in each of the first two innings and held off a late comeback attempt by the Knights, who scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth. Gavin Phillips took the loss, pitching five innings with two strikeouts.
