Hempfield junior Ashley Bensur captures WPIBL girls singles title

Hempfield junior Ashley Bensur averaged 205 over five games Thursday to claim the WPIBL girls singles championship at AMF Mt. Lebanon Lanes.

After qualifying second with a 628 series, Bensur beat Norwin’s Kali Siegel in the semifinals, 189-181, then defeated Thomas Jefferson freshman Annalise Williams in the finals, 207-157.

Bensur, the reigning Westmoreland County Coaches’ Association champ, is now a two-time WPIBL finalist, having lost in the quarterfinals last year.

Defending champion Veronica Flanagan was the top bowler in qualifying, rolling games of 227, 225 and 224 for a 676 series.

Bensur was second in qualifying, followed by Siegel (614), Plum’s Addison Then (608), Williams (599) and Plum’s Callie Schimmer (594).

Flanagan was knocked out by Williams in the semifinals, 202-188.

In the quarterfinals, Siegel defeated Schimmer, 207-189, and Williams beat Then, 188-176.

Next up is the Western Pennsylvania Regional championships Feb. 28-March 2.
