Fox Chapel resident Jack Kartsonas made a smart choice for his final season of college eligibility.
The Vincentian Academy graduate chose to head from Kent State to West Virginia. This week, Kartsonas was given second-team All-Big 12 honors for his role as a right-handed pitcher.
The Mountaineers, who finished the regular season 40-13, was the top seed in the Big 12 Tournament.
Results from West Virginia’s games were too late for this edition. Kartsonas helped Kent State win the Mid-American Conference title in 2023. With West Virginia this season, Kartsonas has compiled a 2.29 ERA with a 6-2 record.
Eleven of Kartsonas’ appearances have come out of the bullpen. He has compiled 63 strikeouts in 55 innings of work. Kartsonas, who also pitched for University Prep in high school, originally started his career at Division III John Carroll.
DiMatteo honored
Dante DiMatteo was chosen as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year. DiMatteo became the fifth Washington & Jefferson pitcher to win the award and the first since 2023. The Fox Chapel graduate finished with a sterling 0.83 ERA and struck out 68 batters in 65 1/3 innings of work.
Troutman finishes 7th
Lehigh freshman Anna Troutman got an idea of what she will need to do in order to challenge for a Patriot League title in the high jump. Troutman placed seventh with a leap of 1.64 meters.
Zoe Whaley from Army won the event with a leap of 1.72.
SSA reaches final
Shady Side Academy advanced to the WPIAL Class 3A boys lacrosse final May 22 against Mt. Lebanon. Results were too late for this edition. Win or lose, the Bulldogs will move on to the PIAA state playoffs.
The Bulldogs have a history of success in lacrosse. Shady Side Academy has won two WPIAL championships, most recently in 2022.
