Herald notebook: Shady Side Academy, Fox Chapel field hockey bow out of state playoffs

The most challenging sports for teams coming out of the WPIAL to compete with teams out east may be field hockey. All three WPIAL champions — Pine-Richland, Fox Chapel and Shady Side Academy — were all shut out in the first round of states.
The Foxes lost to Hershey, 2-0. Shady Side Academy lost to Camp Hill, 2-0. Fox Chapel won the program’s sixth title this season after falling short the past few seasons.
Shady Side Academy tied North Allegheny’s record by winning its 22nd district title this season.
Foxes advance in PIAA tournament
The Fox Chapel boys soccer team has continued to march through the postseason because it has the ability to produce goals from a high number of players.
During the first round of the PIAA Class 4A playoffs Nov. 4, David Zakrocki and Rocco Poli each scored to help the Foxes move past Central York.
Fox Chapel also moved on to the PIAA quarterfinals last season.
Results of the Foxes’ match with District 1 runner-up Abington were too late for this edition.
McCargo loses in second round of state tournament
Shady Side Academy junior Meriwether McCargo won her opening match at the PIAA Class 3A singles tennis tournament by knocking off the fourth-place qualifier out of District 3, Conestoga Valley’s Jade Flores, 6-0, 6-3.
McCargo was eliminated by West Chester Henderson’s Erika Dunwoody in the second round 6-0, 6-0. Dunwoody reached the state final, where she would be tripped up by Penn-Trafford’s Mia Williams.
Shady Side Academy will have new basketball coach
With the start of basketball practices around the corner, Shady Side Academy will have a new man in charge of the boys basketball program. Jim Dudas will take over for David Vadnais. Dudas has been a coach for more than 20 seasons.
He was most recently an assistant for the Knoch boys varsity program under Alan Bauman. He was the head coach of Sewickley Academy during the 2023-24 season.
