Herald roundup: Fox Chapel field hockey dealt 1st loss

The Fox Chapel field hockey team played a doubleheader Sept. 9 and picked up a pair of wins.

In the first game, Fox Chapel defeated Hathaway Brown, 4-0, as Ellie Markel scored two goals while Sloan Rost and Isa Lagazzi also scored. In the second game, the Foxes beat Shaker Heights, 1-0, with Rost getting the game-winner on an assist from Katie McIlroy. Marissa Hardiman had five saves.

The Foxes suffered their first loss of the season, 2-1, to Pine-Richland on Sept. 11. Paige Ryan scored the lone FC goal, and Hardiman recorded 11 saves.

Girls golf

Shady Side Academy girls golf got by Peters Township, 179-183, on Sept. 11. Alexandra Muracca and Elizabeth Walsh each shot 38 to lead SSA. The Indians improved to 4-2 on Sept. 12 with a 185-191 win over Kiski Area. Walsh was the medalist with a 44.

Cross country

The Fox Chapel cross country team competed at the Red, White and Blue Classic at Schenley Park on Sept. 9. Thirty schools and nearly 250 runners took part.

“We had a very successful weekend, especially on the girls side,” FC coach Tom Moul said. “The girls finished first, and five of our runners were on the medal stand.”

Caelan Miller finished fourth, followed by Annika Urban (eighth), Sarena Seeger (ninth), Grace Sisson (13th) and Brooke Krally (24th). Other FC finishers were Izzy Doerr, Anna Folkerts, Megan Stafford, Maggie Gaddess and Ziya Xu.

The boys team finished in seventh place with two medalists in Christian Fitch (seventh) and John Folkerts (23rd). Other varsity runners were Ian Brown, Avery Bursick, Greg Overbeck, Isaac Mah and Ari Schwartz.

Girls tennis

Fox Chapel defeated Bethel Park, 4-1, in a girls tennis match Sept. 11. Amanda Nord, Kristen Friday and Molly Weise won in singles. In doubles, Molly Dean and Emily Fera posted a win.

The Foxes then defeated Baldwin, 5-0, on Sept. 13. Nord, James and Friday earned singles wins and the doubles teams of Molly Weise/Emily Fera and Amanda Schilcher/Molly Dean also won.

The Foxes (12-0) blanked Hampton, 5-0, on Sept. 14 using the same lineup.

Boys golf

Fox Chapel boys golf defeated Woodland Hills, 189-286, and Gateway, 189-232, in a three-team match Sept. 14. FC's Gregor Meyer shot a 32 to tie a school record. Aidan Oehrle posted a 37, followed by Andrew Friend, Grant Thiele and Scott Bitar at 40.

The Fox Chapel Richard Cullinan Invitational was held Friday. The Fox Chapel Red team posted a school record 176 to win. North Allegheny was second at 204, followed by the Fox Chapel White team at 217 and Indiana at 227.

Meyer was the medalist with a 31. Bitar, Amani Dambrosio and Oehrle all shot a 36.

• The Shady Side Academy boys golf team faced off against Mars in a Section 8-AAA match Sept. 14 at Fox Chapel Golf Club. SSA won 194-219. Low scorers for SSA were Adam Lauer with a 33, Brice Delaney with a 37, and Frankie Fuhrer with a 38. The Indians improved to 8-0.

Football

North Hills (2-2, 1-2) scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away from Fox Chapel (1-3, 1-2) in a Class 5A Allegheny Nine Conference game Friday. Micah Morris led the Foxes with 170 yards on 23 carries. Nick Gizzo scored on runs of 2 and 5 yards, while Andrew Jeffrey booted a 24-yard field goal and added two PATs. The Foxes will host Upper St. Clair (3-1, 3-0) on Friday.

• The resurgent Shady Side Academy Indians (2-1, 2-1) scored 25 second-quarter points to pull away from previously-undefeated Apollo-Ridge (3-1, 1-1) to win 38-14 on Friday. Skyy Moore was once again the catalyst as he rushed for 181 yards and scored on 63-, 9- and 34-yard runs. Ivor Wood added TD runs of 4 and 8 yards, and Dino Tomlin scored on a 68-yard punt return. Connor Leenhuis added a pair of PATs.

Next up for SSA will be a road trip to Freeport (2-1, 1-1). The Yellowjackets were swamped by Aliquippa, 52-0, on Friday.
