Herald roundup: Shady Side Academy girls soccer off to fast start

Krystyna Rytel scored five goals to lead the Shady Side Academy girls soccer team to a 10-0 win over St. Joseph on Sept. 6 in a WPIAL Section 1-A game.

SSA traveled to McKeesport on Saturday to take on Serra Catholic and came home with a 6-3 win behind Rytel's three goals. Callie Davis, Nora Navid and Melissa Riggens also scored. Mollie Skvorak had six saves in goal.

“Serra Catholic was strong, and they had a few forwards who were dangerous up top,” SSA coach Leah Powers said. “Our girls worked hard. They won 50/50 challenges and created and took advantage of scoring opportunities. I am happy with how we played.”

Boys golf

Fox Chapel boys golf fell to Franklin Regional, 186-190, in a Section 4-AAA match Sept. 6. Gregor Meyer led the Foxes with a 35, followed by Aiden Oehrle at 38. Grant Thiele, Amani Dambrosio and Scott Bitar each shot 39 as the Foxes fell to 2-2 in the section and 5-2 overall.

Field hockey

The Fox Chapel field hockey team opened its season Sept. 5 with a 6-1 win over Upper St. Clair. Katie McIlroy led the Foxes with two goals and an assist. Sloan Rost scored twice while Paige Ryan picked up a goal and an assist and Ellie Markel added a goal. Marissa Hardiman made three saves in goal.

The Foxes blanked Mt. Lebanon, 4-0, on Sept. 7. Ryan scored two goals and picked up an assist. Grace Knepshield added a goal and an assist, with Rost also scoring a goal. Brooke Ryan had an assist, and Hardiman had one save in goal.

Girls golf

The Shady Side Academy girls golf team defeated Shaler, 191-228, on Sept. 1. SSA's Elizabeth Walsh was the medalist with a 45.

Cross country

The Gateway Invitational was held Sept. 2 with 17 teams participating. The Fox Chapel girls finished in first place.

“That's the second year in a row our girls finished first,” FC coach Tom Moul said. “We took an unprecedented five of the top six places.”

Caelan Miller finished first, followed by Annika Urban in second, Sareena Seeger third, Grace Sisson in fourth and Brooke Krally finishing sixth. The JV girls also finished first, with Anna Folkerts winning and Izzy Doerr finishing second.

The Fox Chapel boys finished in second place, with Christian Fitch posting a second-place finish, followed by John Folkerts in fourth and Ian Brown in ninth.

Girls tennis

Fox Chapel girls tennis scored a 4-1 win over Oakland Catholic on Sept. 5. Amanda Nord, Charlotte James and Kristen Friday won in singles, while the doubles team of Molly Weise and Emily Fera also won.

The Foxes (9-0) swept Woodland Hills, 5-0, on Sept. 7 as James, Molly Dean and Fera won their singles matchups. Doubles winners were Molly Weise/ Friday, along with Amanda Schilcher/Morgann Green.

Football

The Burrell football team must have felt as if the Skyy was falling on them Friday night. Shady Side Academy's Skyy Moore ran for four touchdowns and threw for another as the Indians picked up their first win since 2015, with a 42-8 route of the Buccaneers.

Moore scored on runs of 3, 32, 1 and 8 yards and connected with Michael Tomlin on a 55-yard TD. Tomlin finished with three catches for 104 yards. Alex Ludwick scored for SSA on a 1-yard run, while Connor Lemmhuis converted six PATs. The Indians roared to a 28-0 halftime lead, as they improved to 1-1 and 1-0 in the WPIAL Class 3A Allegheny Conference.

“I was very proud of the way our guys came to play,” SSA coach Chuck DiNardo said. “Our guys were able to execute and make some big plays early. Our offensive and defensive lines set the tone for the game and played the kind of physical football we pride ourselves on at SSA.

“Billy Frolich blocked a punt on the first possession, and that gave us the spark we needed. Skyy did a great job of running the offense. I was very pleased to see our guys respond after our loss to Seton LaSalle.”

Next up for the Indians will be a home contest Friday against undefeated Apollo-Ridge (3-0, 1-0). The Vikings beat Beaver Falls, 27-19, on Friday.

• The Fox Chapel football team pulled off a shocker Friday night as they traveled to the Wolverena and stunned Woodland Hills, 22-21. The Foxes trailed 14-12 entering the fourth quarter but took the lead on a 3-yard Nick Gizzo run followed by Andrew Jeffrey's PAT. The Wolverines failed on a last-second 43-yard field goal attempt.

Micah Morris scored on a 33-yard run and finished with 174 yards. Jeffrey added field goals of 27 and 23 yards, and an errant snap in the end zone resulted in a safety for the Foxes.

“It was a big win for us,” FC coach Tom Loughran said. “They don't lose many games at the Wolverena. They have a great tradition at that stadium, and I have a great respect for their program. We have to keep doing what we did. We preach that if you can run the ball and stop the other team from running the ball, you will win. That's what we did against Woodland Hills.”

The Foxes are 1-2 overall and 1-1 in WPIAL Class 5A Allegheny Nine play. The Foxes will host North Hills (1-2, 0-2) on Friday. The Indians fell to West Allegheny, 29-28, in overtime on Friday.
