High school basketball roundup for Jan. 29, 2025: Oakland Catholic ends North Catholic section winning streak

Madi Pullen sank the go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute, leading No. 3 Oakland Catholic to a 39-37 victory over No. 1 North Catholic in Section 1-4A girls basketball Wednesday night, ending the Trojanettes’ 112-game section winning streak that dated to 2016.

Alayla Bivins scored 12 points to lead the Eagles (14-3, 10-1). Brady Wehner scored 11 points and Sarah Loughry finished with 10 for North Catholic (15-3, 9-1), which won the first meeting of the season between the section rivals, 42-34, on Dec. 11.

Chartiers-Houston 62, Frazier 26 – Ava Kolovich and Ava Capozzoli scored 12 points apiece to lead Chartiers-Houston (14-4) to a nonsection win. Allie Yauch dropped 13 points for Frazier (5-13).

Clairton 74, Carrick 27 – Iyanna Wade lit up the scoreboard with 47 points and Jamiya Childs added 15 as Clairton (12-4) beat Carrick (7-10) in nonsection play. Jocelyn Fisher led the Raiders with 14 points.

Elizabeth Forward 62, Ringgold 17 – Kaelynn Settles and Mia Sostaric each scored 15 points and Chloe Zombek added 13 as Elizabeth Forward (14-3, 11-0) cruised to a Section 3-4A win over Ringgold (7-11, 1-9).

Greensburg Salem 53, Gateway 20 – Mya Heasley scored 14 points, Blessing Gantt added 11 and Vienna Jevicky posted 10 for Greensburg Salem (11-8) in a nonsection win over Gateway (0-14).

Hempfield 58, Kiski Area 28 – Reagan Fisher and Allie Cervola each scored 14 points as Hempfield (10-8) beat Kiski Area (9-9) in nonsection play.

Ligonier Valley 53, Steel Valley 21 – Sydnee Foust had 15 points and 21 rebounds and Adleigh Myers scored 14 in a Section 2-3A win for Ligonier Valley (5-12, 3-7). Taylor Kenney had eight points to lead Steel Valley (2-15, 2-7).

Monessen 44, Avella 33 – Madison Johnson dropped 28 points and Na’Jaziah Carter finished with 11 for Monessen (4-11, 2-9) in a Section 2-1A win. Ava Frank scored 15 and Sydney Stope added 12 points for Avella (8-11, 3-8).

Plum 47, Armstrong 32 – Serena Carnahan and Tamia West each scored 16 points to power Plum (6-11, 4-5) to a Section 1-5A victory against Armstrong (3-14, 2-8). Marlo Mellish posted 16 points for the River Hawks.

Springdale 49, Leechburg 30 – Ashlyn Ferderbar scored 13 points, Talia Brunck contributed 11 and Jocelyn Dexter added 10 for Springdale (8-10, 5-5) in a Section 1-A win over Leechburg (2-13, 2-8).

Boys basketball

Avella 62, Beth-Center 32 – Bryce Wright made four 3-pointers and finished with 19 points, Brayden Fuller also hit four 3-pointers and had 12 points and Nate Cilia posted 11 points for Avella (8-10) in a nonsection win. Jason Zellie scored 10 points for Beth-Center (8-11).

Beaver 60, Lincoln Park 49 – Brady Mayo finished with 37 points to power Beaver (15-4) to a nonsection win. Dionte Henry posted 10 points for Lincoln Park (2-16).

Jeannette 61, Clairton 51 – Kymon’e Brown led all scorers with 18 points and Marcus McGowan added 16 as Jeannette (16-1, 9-1) defeated Clairton (7-7, 7-3) in Section 1-2A. Taris Wooding and Tahvaz Armstrong each scored 11 points while Zaemear Correll and Donte Wright had 10 points apiece for the Bears.

Ligonier Valley 81, Brownsville 55 – Parker Hollick went off for 33 points and recorded his 1,000th career point to lead Ligonier Valley (10-8, 4-3) to a Section 4-3A win against Brownsville (4-13, 2-5). Michael Wisniewski scored 17 points and Michael Vargulish-Graver added 10 for the Rams.

Monessen 72, Cornell 43 – Rodney Johnson led all scorers with 26 points, Devontae Robinson added 12 and Trayvin Craggette finished with 10 in a nonsection win for Monessen (10-6). Terrance Collington scored 17 points and Walter Clarit produced 12 for Cornell (2-16).

Nazareth Prep 76, Perry Traditional Academy 19 – Leon Harris put up 18 points, Will Evans added 14, Mikey Keyes posted 12 and Khylil Johnson finished with 11 as Nazareth Prep (13-4) rolled to a nonsection win over Perry (1-12).

Plum 46, Armstrong 37 – Will Beckner scored 22 points and Max Grice added 13 to send Plum (8-8, 4-5) to a Section 2-5A win. Carter Schotting scored 15 for Armstrong (5-13, 0-10).

Trinity Christian 59, St. Joseph 52 – Graham Hughes scored 19 points, Benjamin Butler added 17 and Daniel Kyte finished with 15 as Trinity Christian (9-3) defeated St. Joseph (7-11) in nonsection play. Ben Bartolovic led all scorers with 23 points and Gabe Maltese had 10 for the Spartans.

Waynesburg 60, Yough 28 – Cole Headlee dropped 18 points, Dane Woods followed with 14 and Alex VanSickle scored 12 to power Waynesburg (8-9) to a nonsection win over Yough (1-18).

Winchester Thurston 72, Sto-Rox 56 – Matt Southers put up 28 points, Mike Hammerling and Aiden Piemme scored 14 points apiece and Anthony Pipkin added 12 for Winchester Thurston (12-5) in a nonsection win. MJ Thomas scored 15 points and Javon Nelson finished with 14 for Sto-Rox (2-16).
