High school football roundup for Aug. 30, 2024: Bethel Park rolls past Mars

Ja Vaughn Moore rushed for 195 yards and three touchdowns to lead Class 5A Bethel Park to a 49-13 nonconference victory at Class 4A No. 3 Mars (1-1) on Friday night.

David Dennison added 142 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Bethel Park (2-0) while teammate Tanner Pfeuffer threw for 120 yards and one TD.

Luke Goodworth tossed for 151 yards and both Mars touchdowns.

In other area games:

Armstrong 42, Hampton 30 — Jaydon Oliver threw for three touchdowns and ran for one more to lead Class 5A Armstrong (2-0) to the win at Class 4A Hampton (1-1). Porter Kelly threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns for Hampton.

Avonworth 28, West Mifflin 22 — Bryce Metz ran for two touchdowns as Class 3A No. 3 Avonworth (2-0) beat Class 4A West Mifflin (1-1). Zahir Ismaeli threw for 121 yards and ran for a TD for West Mifflin.

Burgettstown 11, Bentworth 6 — William Stevenson scored on a 5-yard fumble return in the third quarter as Burgettstown (1-0) beat Bentworth (1-1) in nonconference play.

Carlynton 21, Avella 0 — Devonte Dean tossed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Class 2A Carlynton (2-0) to the shutout at Class A Avella (0-2).

Carmichaels 8, Sto-Rox 8 — Class A Carmichaels (0-0-1) tied Class 2A Sto-Rox (0-1-1) in a game called due to lightning in the fourth quarter.

Chartiers-Houston 52, Springdale 0 — In nonconference play, Aaron Walsh ran for 89 yards and three touchdowns as Chartiers-Houston (1-1) downed Springdale (0-1). Dominic Andreolli added 59 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Clairton 43, Serra Catholic 0 – Quintin Thompson threw for 179 yards and three touchdowns as Clairton (2-0) rolled to a nonconference victory over Serra Catholic (0-2). Donte Wright had three scores, and Drahcir Jones scored twice for the Bears.

Cornell 27, California 3 — Cornell (2-0) defeated California (1-1) in a nonconference game. The Raiders have outscored opponents 71-3 through two games.

Derry 21, Freeport 7 — Damauri Robinson ran for two touchdowns and Max Doperak caught a 33-yard strike from Anthony Sacco as Derry (1-1) defeated Freeport (1-1) in nonconference play. Drew Ross connected with Owen Neistein on a 31-yard TD pass for the Yellowjackets. The game was scoreless at halftime.

Fort Cherry 41, OLSH 14 — Ryan Huey ran for 184 yards and two touchdowns to lead Class A No. 1 Fort Cherry (2-0) to the win over Class 2A OLSH (1-1). Matt Sieg added three rushing touchdowns for Fort Cherry.

Fox Chapel 38, Baldwin 7 — Victor Nernberg rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown as Fox Chapel (1-1) snapped a 22-game losing streak by beating Baldwin (0-2) in a nonconference game. Joey Geller threw for 109 yards and ran for two Fox Chapel touchdowns. Baldwin’s Noah Mickolay tossed for 183 yards and a touchdown to Noah Saccani, who caught five passes for 113 yards.

Frazier 36, Mapletown 0 — Brady Secrist threw for 138 yards and three touchdowns as Frazier (1-1) shut out Mapletown (1-1) in nonconference play. Derek Diamond added 131 rushing yards and one touchdown for the Commodores.

Imani Christian 34, Beaver Falls 0 — Steve Vandiver threw for 182 yards and two touchdowns as Class 3A No. 2 Imani Christian (2-0) shut out Class 2A Beaver Falls (0-2) in a game called at halftime due to inclement weather. David Davis and Gabe Jenkins each scored on 96-yard interception returns.

Indiana 14, Ringgold 13 (OT) – Quinn Lipniskis found Rocco Cosentino for a touchdown in overtime as Indiana (1-1) won a nonconference game against Ringgold (0-2). The Rams also scored in overtime but couldn’t convert the two-point conversion.

Jeannette 42, Apollo-Ridge 28 — Jayce Powell caught two touchdown passes and returned a punt 60 yards for another score as Class A Jeannette (2-0) defeated Class 2A Apollo-Ridge (0-2). Kymon’e Brown threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more for Jeannette. Alexander Clawson threw three fourth-quarter TD passes for Apollo-Ridge.

Jefferson-Morgan 34, Waynesburg Central 28 — Class A Jefferson-Morgan (2-0) won on the road at Class 2A Waynesburg Central (1-1).

Knoch 28, North Catholic 17 — Codi Mullen ran for two touchdowns and caught an 80-yard TD pass from Colt Sprankle as Class 4A Knoch (1-1) defeated Class 3A No. 5 North Catholic (0-2). Sprankle threw for 166 yards and added a rushing touchdown. Joey Felitsky threw for 295 yards and a touchdown for North Catholic.

Latrobe 32, Plum 18 — Alex Tatsch ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns and caught a TD pass to lead Latrobe (2-0) to the nonconference win against Plum (0-2). T.J. Futules threw for 160 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score to pace Plum’s offense.

Leechburg 42, Beth-Center 8 — In a nonconference game, Leechburg (2-0) defeated Beth-Center (0-1).

Meadville 48, Connellsville 41 — Meadville (2-0) defeated Connellsville (0-2) in an overtime, nonconference game.

Mohawk 32, Laurel 27 — Bobby Fadden threw for 146 yards and a touchdown and ran for 181 yards and two TDs, including the winning score in the fourth quarter, as Class 2A Mohawk (1-1) slipped past Class A Laurel (0-2). Luca Santini threw for 337 yards and two Laurel touchdowns.

Monessen 62, West Greene 6 — Monessen (2-0) downed West Greene (0-2) in a nonconference game.

Neshannock 48, Union 20 — Jino Mozzocio threw for 112 yards and a touchdown and ran for 165 yards and four TDs to lead Class A No. 4 Neshannock (2-0) to the win against Class 2A Union (0-1).

New Castle 42, Hopewell 19 — Kyrell Harris threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns — both to Nate McKnight — to lead Class 4A New Castle (2-0) to the win over Class 3A Hopewell (1-1). Harris added a rushing touchdown while McKnight caught six passes for 182 yards. James Armstrong scored on a pair of 1-yard runs for Hopewell.

North Allegheny 42, Gateway 7 — Class 6A No. 1 North Allegheny (2-0) outgained Class 5A Gateway (0-2), 390 yards to 161 yards, in its nonconference win. Peter Notaro kicked field goals of 52 and 18 yards for North Allegheny while the Tigers defense scored on a fumble recovery by Declan Flaherty and a safety.

North Hills 13, Seneca Valley 6 — Julius Green and Jack Martin ran for touchdowns as Class 5A North Hills (2-0) beat Class 6A No. 5 Seneca Valley (0-2).

Northgate 29, Riverside 25 — Devontae Smith hit Anthony Hopkins with an 8-yard pass in the fourth quarter to lift Class A Northgate (1-1) to the win at Class 2A Riverside (0-2). Smith threw for 111 yards and two touchdowns while teammate Darius Fields ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns and returned a kickoff 85 yards for another score. Ayden Garcia threw for 222 yards and four touchdowns for Riverside.

Penn-Trafford 28, Mt. Lebanon 7 — Four different players scored touchdowns for Class 5A Penn-Trafford (1-1) in its win against Class 6A Mt. Lebanon (0-2).

Pine-Richland 22, Central Catholic 17 – Aaron “Oobi” Strader scored on an 8-yard run and hit Jay Timmons on a 37-yard touchdown strike as Class 5A No. 2 Pine-Richland (2-0) knocked off Class 6A No. 2 Central Catholic (0-2) in a nonconference matchup. Mac Miller scored on a 17-yard touchdown run to give the Rams the lead for good in the fourth quarter. Jy’Aire Walls threw a pair of touchdown passes, a 75-yarder to Xxavier Thomas and a 68-yarder to Bradley Gompers, for the Vikings.

Seton LaSalle 21, Bishop Canevin 14 – Deondre Hill’s 10-yard TD run in the third quarter proved to be the difference as Class 2A No. 5 Seton La Salle (2-0) defeated Class A No. 5 Bishop Canevin (0-1) in a nonconference clash.

South Allegheny 50, Brentwood 7 — Camden Lewis and Cam Epps scored two touchdowns each as Class 2A South Allegheny (2-0) defeated Class A Brentwood (0-2).

South Fayette 28, Shaler 6 — Drew Wehorsky threw for 167 yards and one touchdown and ran for 100 yards and two TDs to lead South Fayette (2-0) to the nonconference win against Shaler (1-1). Sylas Aiken added 100 rushing yards and a 44-yard touchdown run.

Southmoreland 49, East Allegheny 14 — Anthony Smith threw for 189 yards and three touchdowns to lead Southmoreland (2-0) to the nonconference win against East Allegheny (0-2). Eliot Premus caught six passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns for Southmoreland. Damarjae Warren caught four passes for 93 yards and a touchdown and returned an interception 75 yards for another score for East Allegheny.

Steel Valley 28, Washington 8 — In a 2A, nonconference matchup, Donald Barksdale ran for four touchdowns to lead No. 2 Steel Valley (1-1) to victory over top-ranked Washington (1-1). Tyler Crawford scored Washington’s only touchdown on a 46-yard interception return.

Trinity 49, McGuffey 6 — Jonah Williamson ran for two touchdowns as Class 4A Trinity (1-1) scored 42 first-half points on way to defeating Class 3A McGuffey (0-2).

Upper St. Clair 41, Canon-McMillan 6 — Class 5A No. 3 Upper St. Clair forced seven Canon-McMillan turnovers, including Randy Yan’s 20-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter, in its nonconference win. Julian Dahlem rushed for 165 yards and three touchdowns for Upper St. Clair (2-0). Ty Jansma threw for 121 yards and ran for a touchdown for Canon-McMillan (0-2).

Albert Gallatin 42, Carrick 0 — Nasir Moore ran for two touchdowns as Albert Gallatin (1-1) defeated Carrick (0-2) in nonconference play.

Butler 42, Brashear 0 — Alec Teff threw for 130 yards and two touchdowns and Mark Klemz ran for two TDs as Butler (1-1) blanked Brashear (0-2) in nonconference play.

Hickory 40, University Prep 14 — Hickory (2-0) defeated University Prep (0-2) in nonconference play.

Hollidaysburg 42, Allderdice 0 — Hollidaysburg (2-0) shut out Allderdice (1-1) in nonconference play.

Uniontown 34, Perry 6 — In nonconference play, Uniontown (1-1) beat Perry (0-1).
