High school football roundup for Sept. 12, 2025: Avonworth routs Thomas Jefferson in battle of top teams

Dmitri Velsaris ran for two touchdowns and Evan Loutzenhiser scored on fumble and interception returns as Class 3A No. 1 Avonworth earned a convincing 41-14 victory over Class 4A No. 1 Thomas Jefferson (3-1) in a nonconference football game between top-ranked teams Friday night.
Jaden Jones caught a 92-yard pass from Carson Bellinger, and Calder Mahan booted two field goals for Avonworth (4-0), which also defeated Class 4A powerhouse Aliquippa in a nonconference game last week.
Tyler Eber returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown and scored on a 21-yard TD pass from Harrison Kolling for the Jaguars.
Here’s a look at the other Week 3 matchups from Friday night:
Class 6A
Central Catholic 57, Mt. Lebanon 0 — In Class 6A play, top-ranked Central Catholic (3-1, 1-0) shut out Mt. Lebanon (0-4, 0-1).
Norwin 56, Seneca Valley 13 — Tristyn Tavares threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to lead Class 6A No. 4 Norwin (3-1, 1-0) to victory at Class 6A No. 5 Seneca Valley (1-3, 0-1). Potter Brozeski returned a kickoff 96 yards for a score for the Knights, and Joshua Lenart, Giovani Rothrauff, Jake Knight, Zack Pawling and Parker Rigo also scored.
Class 5A
Penn Hills 49, Fox Chapel 14 — Doryan Peay ran for 180 yards and two touchdowns as Penn Hills (1-3, 1-0) defeated Fox Chapel (2-2, 0-1) in Northeast Conference play. Devin Harris threw for 139 yards and a touchdown to Richard Littlejohn III, who caught five passes for 96 yards and scored on a rushing TD. Joe Geller ran for 107 yards and threw a TD pass to Nathan Johnson for Fox Chapel. Max Melocchi also scored on a 1-yard run for the Foxes.
Pine-Richland 48, North Hills 6 — Aaron Strader threw for 331 yards and three touchdowns and ran for one TD to lead Class 5A No. 1 Pine-Richland (3-1, 1-0) to the Northeast Conference win at North Hills (0-4, 0-1). Maclane Miller added two rushing touchdowns for Pine-Richland.
Shaler 27, Plum 20 — Aaron Aversa threw for 135 yards and one touchdown and ran for another TD as Shaler (1-3, 1-0) beat Plum (2-2, 0-1) in a Northeast Conference matchup. C.J. Hart rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns for Plum while teammate John Nonnenberg tossed for 267 yards.
Class 3A
Imani Christian 72, Valley 0 — Gabe Jenkins threw for 110 yards and three touchdowns, ran for another TD and scored on a punt return as Class 3A No. 2 Imani Christian (4-0, 1-0) downed Valley (0-4, 0-1) in the Allegheny 7 Conference. Tyvon Sewell rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns for Imani Christian, which led at the half, 52-0.
Beaver 51, Hopewell 50 — Travis Clear threw for 391 yards and two touchdowns as Beaver (2-2, 1-0) rallied to defeat Class 3A No. 3 Hopewell (3-1, 0-1) in a Western Hills Conference matchup. Junior Marino caught nine passes for 216 yards and one touchdown and teammate Micah Pupi added five receptions for 167 yards and one TD for Beaver, which trailed by 11 entering the fourth quarter. Hopewell’s James Armstrong threw for 346 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 263 yards and two TDs.
Central Valley 49, McGuffey 6 — Ethan Shearer rushed for 160 yards and three touchdowns as Central Valley (1-3, 1-0) beat McGuffey (0-4, 0-1) in Western Hills Conference play. Braddock Ambrose tossed for 164 yards and two touchdowns.
North Catholic 42, Quaker Valley 0 — In the Western Hills Conference, Joey Felitsky threw for 212 yards and five touchdowns — including three to Nick Wasielewski — as Class 3A No. 5 North Catholic (4-0, 1-0) downed Quaker Valley (2-2, 0-1). Wasielewski caught four passes for 113 yards.
Class 2A
Shady Side Academy 36, Ligonier Valley 6 — Javon Johnston threw for three touchdowns as Shady Side Academy (3-0, 1-0) defeated Ligonier Valley (0-4, 0-1) in the Allegheny Conference. Bryce Vida scored on a short TD run for the Rams.
South Allegheny 20, OLSH 6 — Joe Gamret rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown and scored on a blocked punt return as Class 2A No. 2 South Allegheny (4-0, 1-0) defeated OLSH (1-3, 0-1) in Allegheny Conference play. Alijah Cook hit Drew Cook with two touchdown passes for South Allegheny.
Steel Valley 56, South Park 7 — Da’Ron Barksdale rushed for 165 yards and three touchdowns, caught a scoring pass and returned a fumble for another touchdown as Class 2A No. 5 Steel Valley (2-2, 1-0) upset Class A No. 1 South Park (3-1, 0-1). Tyce Barron threw for 111 yards and two touchdowns for Steel Valley, which jumped to a 42-0 halftime lead.
Keystone Oaks 28, Sto-Rox 0 — In the Century Conference, Owen Gearhart rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns as Keystone Oaks (1-3, 1-0) shut out Sto-Rox (0-4, 0-1).
Seton LaSalle 61, Charleroi 14 — Kymarr Freeman scored three touchdowns as Class 2A No. 4 Seton LaSalle (3-1, 1-0) beat Charleroi (0-4, 0-1) in Century Conference play.
Washington 35, Waynesburg Central 14 — Jahvon Woods ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns to lead Washington (3-1, 1-0) past Waynesburg Central (2-2, 0-1) in Century Conference play. Tristan Reed added three rushing touchdowns.
Ellwood City 21, Mohawk 15 — In the Midwestern Athletic Conference, Tyler Smiley tossed for 109 yards and two touchdowns as Ellwood City (2-2, 1-0) beat Mohawk (1-3, 0-1). Andrew Lloud kicked three field goals for Mohawk.
Freedom 42, New Brighton 0 — In the Midwestern Athletic Conference, Kaden Bailey rushed for 110 yards and three touchdowns to lead Freedom (3-1, 1-0) to the win against New Brighton (3-1, 0-1).
Western Beaver 36, Beaver Falls 8 — Wyatt Sparbanie ran for 161 yards and three touchdowns to lead Class 2A No. 3 Western Beaver (4-0, 1-0) to the Midwestern Athletic Conference win at Beaver Falls (0-4, 0-1).
Class A
Shenango 56, Northgate 20 — In the Big 7 Conference, Niko DeSalvo ran for 183 yards and four touchdowns as Shenango (2-2, 1-0) beat Northgate (0-4, 0-1). Devontae Smith threw for 108 yards and all three Northgate touchdowns.
Cornell 18, Burgettstown 13 — M.J. Stuckey threw for 127 yards and two touchdowns and Khylil Johnson added 124 rushing yards and a TD as Cornell (3-1, 1-0) defeated Burgettstown (1-2, 0-1) in the Black Hills Conference.
Fort Cherry 44, Chartiers-Houston 14 — Matt Sieg threw two scoring passes and ran for 111 yards and a touchdown as Class A No. 1 Fort Cherry (4-0, 1-0) defeated Chartiers-Houston (2-2, 0-1) in the Black Hills Conference. Fort Cherry scored 30 points in the first quarter.
Brentwood 42, Springdale 0 — Cedric Davis Jr. threw for 162 yards and ran for three touchdowns as Brentwood (2-2, 1-0) shut out Springdale (0-3, 0-1) in Eastern Conference play. Daysaun Spencer returned an interception 54 yards for a score, and Nicky Wardzinski added two TD runs.
Avella 18, West Greene 6 — In the Tri-County South, Charles Rush threw for 147 yards and ran for two touchdowns to lead Avella (4-0, 1-0) to the win against West Greene (0-4, 0-1). Bryce Wright caught three passes for 112 yards for Avella.
Beth-Center 35, Carmichaels 6 — In the Tri-County South, Beth-Center (1-3, 1-0) beat Carmichaels (1-2, 0-1).
California 8, Bentworth 7 — Logan Hartley threw for 133 yards and California’s only touchdown in its win over Bentworth (2-2, 0-1) in Tri-County South play. Malachi Peak added 107 rushing yards for California (3-1, 1-0).
Jefferson-Morgan 63, Mapletown 6 — Triton Farabee completed all seven of his passes for 162 yards and three touchdowns as Jefferson-Morgan (4-0, 1-0) scored 57 points in the first quarter in its Tri-County South win over Mapletown (1-3, 0-1). John Woodward caught six passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns.
Nonconference
Albert Gallatin 40, Northern Garrett (Md.) 24 — Adam Pegg ran for two touchdowns, caught a TD pass and returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to lead Albert Gallatin (4-0) to the nonconference win against Garrett (Md.) (0-2).
Apollo-Ridge 42, Carlynton 0 — Jaden McCray ran for two touchdowns and caught another as Apollo-Ridge (2-2) downed Carlynton (1-3) in nonconference play.
Bethel Park 41, West Mifflin 7 — Evan Devine threw for 144 yards and four touchdowns and added a rushing TD as Class 5A Bethel Park (3-1) beat Class 4A West Mifflin (1-3). David Dennison had 100 receiving yards and a touchdown for Bethel Park.
Canon-McMillan 31, Armstrong 21 — Ty Jansma threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns to lead Class 6A Canon-McMillan (2-2) over Class 5A Armstrong (1-3). Ethan Campoli caught eight passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Deo Beck threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns for Armstrong.
Chartiers Valley 62, Baldwin 12 — Luke Miranda threw for 167 yards and three touchdowns as Class 4A Chartiers Valley (3-1) beat Class 5A Baldwin (0-4).
Hollidaysburg 33, Butler 6 — Cole DeLattre ran for 175 yards and a touchdown as Hollidaysburg (4-0) defeated Butler (3-1) in nonconference play. Josh Banks and Tim Snyder added two rushing touchdowns each for Hollidaysburg. Nicholas Baggetta threw for 146 yards for Butler.
Indiana 48, Laurel Highlands 7 — Indiana (1-3) scored 28 points in the second quarter in its nonconference win against Laurel Highlands (2-2).
Montour 41, Knoch 8 — Luke Medvitz threw five touchdown passes to lead Class 5A No. 5 Montour (3-1) to the win at Class 4A Knoch (0-4). Caden Halajcio caught three touchdown passes. Keegan Orris caught a 16-yard TD pass from Kade Sundie for Knoch.
New Castle 53, Yough 0 — Marino Graham ran twice — both for touchdowns — for 130 yards and threw for a TD as Class 4A New Castle (3-1) shut out Class 3A Yough (2-0). Kai Cox scored on two punt returns.
Peters Township 31, Trinity 12 — Lucas Rost caught six passes for 132 yards and a touchdown as Class 5A No. 2 Peters Township (4-0) beat Class 4A Trinity (1-3). Nolan DiLucia threw for 159 yards and two touchdowns for Peters Township while Cole Neupaver added 132 rushing yards and one TD. Jonah Williamson threw for 130 yards and a touchdown for Trinity.
Ringgold 33, Greensburg Salem 13 — Dennis Hawkins threw for 220 yards and three touchdowns as Class 4A Ringgold (3-1) defeated Class 3A Greensburg Salem (2-2). Amoni Ward rushed for 163 yards and one touchdown and caught four passes for 98 yards and another TD for Ringgold. Tyrese Lewis and Braydon Miller caught touchdowns passes from Brody Chismar for Greensburg Salem.
South Fayette 27, Elizabeth Forward 24 — Drew Welhorsky threw for 138 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 107 yards as Class 5A South Fayette (3-1) held on to defeat Class 3A No. 4 Elizabeth Forward (3-1). Aayden Wright added 145 rushing yards and a touchdown for South Fayette, which jumped to an early 20-3 lead. Ryan Messina threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns for Elizabeth Forward and ran for 157 yards and one TD while teammate Landon Honick caught 13 passes for 168 yards and one touchdown.
Southmoreland 24, Blackhawk 17 — Dawson Wolfe threw for 114 yards and ran for a touchdown as Class 3A Southmoreland (4-0) defeated Class 4A Blackhawk (1-3). Jackson Mickens ran for 41 yards and one touchdown and scored on a 19-yard blocked punt return for Southmoreland. Brayden McCarthy ran for 71 yards and two touchdowns for Blackhawk, which led 14-0 early.
Spring Mills (W.Va.) 52, Connellsville 0 — Spring Mills (W.Va.) (2-1) blanked Connellsville (1-3) in nonconference play.
Upper St. Clair 62, Hampton 3 — Ethan Hellmann threw for 297 yards and five touchdowns to lead Class 5A No. 3 Upper St. Clair (4-0) to the win over Class 4A Hampton (2-2). Nico D’Orazio caught three touchdowns passes for Upper St. Clair, which led at halftime, 48-3.
City League
Westinghouse 76, Perry 0 — Westinghouse (4-0, 2-0) won big over Perry (0-4, 0-2) in City League play.
Allderdice 40, Uniontown 0 — Marcus Matthews and Dav’veion Lee scored two touchdowns each as Allderdice (3-1) shut out Uniontown (2-2) in nonconference play.
